Job description
The Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator is responsible for installing underground conduit and dry utilities. This position implements all directional drilling plans and procedures according to company plan. Ensures compliance of all drilling operations of rig site and objectives.
Requirements
•Manages all well bore paths and rate of penetration, checking gauges and listening to equipment to assess drilling conditions and adjust drilling or alter equipment in accordance with company and industry standards
•Assists with the install of proper pulling gear and hook up product
•Sets up equipment to include: the drill, alarm, water tanks and grounding the machine
•Maintains records of all data and prepares required documentation
•Diagnoses and maintains company equipment per service requirements and safety guidelines to ensure efficiency in maintenance of all company assets and locations
•Communicates continuously with HDD Locator to confirm location of the drill head
•Provides required training to all trainees and field staff, assesses performance, and administers all drilling operations
•Collaborates with various departments to manage workflows for all projects, ensures adequate supplies, productivity, safety, and prepares schedules for all projects
•Communicates and represents the organization to clients, the public, government, and other external sources
•Conducts post-job quality checks
•Cleans, checks fluid levels and conducts a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, performs the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required paperwork, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment
•Utilizes defensive driving practices
•Operates truck in a manner that ensures compliance with all applicable company, state and federal safety regulations
•Follows required company and DOT reporting procedures
•Maintains paperwork during the day including DVIR and driver’s log book
•Ensures the truck has current licenses, tags, permits, and proof of insurance
•Competent in operating Vermeer and Ditch Witch horizontal directional drills
•Competent in operating locating systems such as F-2, F-5 and F-5 Flacon
•Perform simple math for accuracy of drilling and locating
•Perform manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions
•Analyze job locations for utility lines, permitting, and traffic control in order to complete construction activities without quality defects, safety incidents or any type of property damage
•Complete daily inspections and reporting of maintenance issues on vehicles, trailers and equipment
•Complete bore logs, timesheets, and daily completion forms accurately and legibly
•Operate all vehicles, equipment and tools while adhering to company safety standards
Experience and Education
•2-3 years of drill operating experience preferred
•2-5 years of experience in the construction, underground or telecom industry.
•CDL Class A license with tanker endorsement preferred
•Valid DOT Medical Card required
Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:
•Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required within two weeks of employment.
•Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
