Are you looking for an entry level opportunity to build a rewarding career in electrical line work? Our new Ground Technician position is intended to prepare you for advancement into the Cooperative’s Apprentice Line Technician program as vacancies occur.
The following experience is highly preferred. Candidates with this experience will receive priority consideration:
- Certificate from a Line Worker Training Program or equivalent work experience such as Groundman.
- Six months progressive experience in metering, overhead, or underground line constructions with an electric utility.
- Pole top and bucket truck rescue experience or certification.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Valid and current driver's license.
- Basic electrical and mechanical knowledge.
- Ability to utilize iPads and other devices to gather and record data.
- Ability to navigate using electronic maps and navigational devices.
- Knowledge of the equipment and fleet required to perform line construction.
- Ability to meet the excessive physical demands of this position including walking long distances over difficult terrains and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 75 pounds.
- Ability or desire to climb utility poles using utility climbing equipment.
- Ability to complete pole top and bucket rescue procedures or willingness to learn.
- Desire to work in open areas in all types of weather and terrain.
- Have or be able to obtain a Class A Virginia commercial driver's license within two years of hire.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays whenver necessary and on short-notice.
- Current residency within 45 minutes legal driving time to 1712 W Virginia Ave, Crewe, VA 23930.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent people skills and a passion to serve.
- Ability to learn and understand SEC's electrical system.
- Communicate with members in a highly professional and courteous manner.
- Remove, install, and change meters as well as perform meter tests.
- Use an iPad for data entry and work tracking.
- Perform basic electrical connections.
- Perform line inspections.
- Assist construction crews with the installation of overhead and underground services.
- Assist service crews with security light replacements, cutting trees, and other work as needed.
- Operate hydraulic, battery, and manual tools.
- Escort outage restoration crews during restoration events.
- Identify and properly document hazard trees and vegetation issues that may cause power outages.
- Assist other departments as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This position is subject to adverse weather conditions/hazards and subject to work-related hazards while performing this job.
- Outside work with physical exertion requiring upper body strength and stamina.
- Strength in walking, sitting, and standing.
- Must be able to safely lift, carry, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
- Must be able to climb and balance.
- Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
- Must have good eyesight, depth perception, and color vision.
- Must shovel dirt and work around noisy construction equipment.
- Must work in uneven terrain.
