The grind operator is responsible for metal removal on the castings to meet print and can be after the cut-off operation, rough-out, repair, weld grinding, and finish grinding. Must be able to work using the required safety equipment and keep a clean, organized work area, communicate effectively, work all mandatory overtime, and perform duties in a positive team like manner.
A grind operator will utilize scissor table, pneumatic vice, disc grinder, pencil grinder, snag grinder, swing grinder, belt sander, small cut-off saw, jib crane, and abrasive blast.
· Employees must demonstrate good daily work habits (starts on time, returns from breaks on time, keeps work area clean and orderly, works in a safe manner to prevent accidents, etc.).
· Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
· Maintain a positive attitude and work cooperatively with fellow co-workers, must be a team player.
· Possess the physical ability to lift with frequent bending with manual dexterity and aural acuity.
· Adaptable to environmental and safety requirements while maintaining proper PPE requirements such as steel toe shoes, respirators, eye protection, gloves, etc.
· Must be able to perform daily equipment start-up inspections and operate equipment in a safe manner.
· Must be able to operate pencil grinder and angle grinder safely and efficiently.
· Must understand the basic casting terminology (finning, burn-in, slag, shrink, misrun, shift, etc.).
· Must be able to follow and practice basic finishing procedures.
· Must load and unload castings onto carts and move them in and out of area as required.
· Perform all requirements of Step C – Grinder
· Must obtain a lift truck license and be able to safely operate it in all areas of the plant.
· Must be able to operate swing and snag grinders safely and efficiently (adjust guards, change wheels, etc.).
· Must be able to operate blast cabinet as backup.
· Perform all requirements of Step B – Grinder
· Possess good communication and people skills and train new grinders.
· Ability to perform rough inspection of castings.
· Must be able to assist Finishing Room Assembly Specialist and Leadman in tray and cast-fab assemblies.
· Must understand Steeltech alloy designations and the necessity to keep them identified.
