Description
Reporting to the Construction Manager, the General Construction Superintendent will provide field leadership and oversight of multiple contractors, ensuring that all scopes are delivered safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards. The General Construction Superintendent will serve as the NexGen representative on site, acting as a primary interface between management, engineering, contractors, and site services. This position is critical to ensuring that the NexGen’s expectations for safety, cost, schedule, and quality are consistently achieved across all field activities.
This is a site-based role working in a dynamic, multi discipline, and fast-paced construction environment. The General Construction Superintendent is responsible for coordinating activities across multiple work fronts and engaging directly with contractors, engineers, and managers. The role requires a hands-on leadership style, adaptability to shifting priorities, and a proactive approach to safety, quality and problem-solving.
LOCATION
This position will be based at the NexGen Rook I site on a 2 week in/2 week out rotating schedule. Accommodations and meals are provided while on rotation. Travel logistics to/from site are coordinated by NexGen.
Circumstances may require work based out of the Saskatoon office periodically.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Provide overall leadership and coordination of field construction activities on behalf of NexGen, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, on budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Ensure all contractors comply with project-specific safety plans, NexGen safety absolutes, environmental requirements, and regulatory obligations.
- Oversee daily and weekly progress by monitoring production rates, manpower levels, and equipment utilization, validating against plan and schedule.
- Conduct site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to confirm compliance with QA/QC, environmental, safety, and contractual requirements.
- Support construction planning and readiness reviews to ensure contractors mobilize with clear execution plans, adequate resources, and proper training.
- Lead and facilitate regular site coordination meetings with contractors, driving accountability, resolving field issues, and escalating risks proactively.
- Coordinate closely with the NexGen Construction Manager and Engineering to align design intent, schedule, and field execution.
- Review, validate, and approve contractor turnover documentation and quality packages to ensure NexGen standards are met.
- Prepare and deliver progress reports to management, highlighting schedule, budget, risks, and performance metrics.
- Mentor and support the NexGen field team (superintendents, coordinators, quality representatives) to build capability, alignment, and strong execution culture.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and high-performing work environment through coaching, feedback, and team development.
- Identify potential project risks, develop mitigation strategies, and monitor their effectiveness throughout execution.
- Coordinate with internal departments, contractors, and vendors to ensure resources, services, and deliverables are available to support project needs.- 15–20 years of progressive construction experience, including 10+ years in a senior supervisory or leadership role.
- Experience in mining, heavy industrial, or large-scale infrastructure projects is strongly preferred.
- Red Seal and or Post-secondary diploma or degree in construction management, engineering, or a related discipline (equivalent experience considered).
- Proven ability to provide project oversight and manage multiple concurrent projects valued at $50M–$100M+, with demonstrated success in scheduling, budgeting, risk mitigation, and multi-year planning.- Strong technical knowledge and proficiency in construction methods and materials, including structural concrete, steel, and timber. Solid understanding of engineering and design principles, drawings, and technical plans.
- Extensive experience managing and leading multi-disciplinary teams and coordinating with contractors, subcontractors, and internal NexGen groups (engineering, quality, safety, site services) in a remote and complex environment.
- Expertise in construction management, contract administration, productivity analysis, quality assurance, health and safety regulations, environmental compliance, and risk management.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and familiar with construction scheduling and management software (e.g., Primavera P6, Procore, or AutoCAD). Able to adapt to new systems and technologies as required.
- Demonstrated credibility and integrity, with strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills. Proven ability to foster collaboration, build accountable teams, and drive a safe, respectful, and inclusive culture.
- Other requirements include a Valid driver’s license. Ability to pass a background check, medical testing and drug/alcohol testing as required for site access.
