The Field Safety Specialist is responsible for promoting and ensuring a culture of safety across all field operations. This role supports utility construction crews (distribution, transmission, substation, and storm restoration) by conducting site inspections, delivering safety training, enforcing compliance with OSHA and company safety policies, and identifying and mitigating hazards in real time. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of utility industry regulations, practical field experience, and a proactive approach to safety leadership.
- Perform routine and unannounced jobsite safety audits and inspections on active utility construction sites
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA/MSHA/FMCSA compliance, including PPE usage, trenching/shoring, fall protection, energized work, etc.
- Conduct incident investigations and root cause analysis; prepare and submit detailed reports
- Support and coach foremen and general foremen on job hazard analysis (JHA) and safe work plans
- Deliver toolbox talks, tailboard reviews, and on-site safety training to crews
- Participate in safety stand-downs, site orientations, and emergency response drills
- Monitor and document Good Catches and Near Misses; contribute to trend analysis
- Assist in implementing new safety programs, technology, and behavioral-based safety strategies
- Serve as a safety liaison between field personnel and company leadership
- Collaborate with operations and storm coordination teams during mobilization for storm events or emergency response
- Ensure that subcontractors adhere to all safety standards and are held accountable for compliance
- 3–5 years of experience in utility construction safety (transmission, distribution, substation, or storm restoration)
- OSHA 30 certification required; First Aid/CPR required; additional certifications (CUSP, CHST, etc.) preferred
- Working knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 standards and DOT/FMCSA requirements
- Strong communication, coaching, and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to travel regionally and work irregular hours as needed, including storm response mobilizations
- Proficiency in digital safety reporting platforms and Microsoft Office Suite
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Journeyman Lineman or previous field crew experience highly preferred
- Experience supporting multiple crews across varied utility scopes
- Proven ability to engage and influence field personnel toward a safety-first mindset
This is a field-based position with frequent travel to active construction sites. Must be able to work in extreme outdoor conditions (heat, cold, inclement weather). Exposure to energized environments, heavy equipment, and traffic zones.
