General Summary of Position
Oversee and assist with health and safety operations and requirements related to road, bridge and highway construction projects. Responsible for implementing and overseeing compliance with applicable policies, rules, regulations and training. This person will work closely with executive management and field trades to assist in developing and maintaining a positive safety culture. Responsibilities will include inspections, education, training, incident investigations, completing and maintaining written documentation, verbal communication and other outreach to a broad range and culturally diverse workforce. Person should be familiar with civil construction and the occupational requirements of the associated trades and the applicable hazards.
Key Responsibilities
•Enforce a safety-first culture across all project sites.
•Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific Safety Programs, policies, and emergency response plans.
•Conduct pre-job safety planning meetings to proactively identify potential hazards and solutions before work begins.
•Lead training and education programs for employees, including new hire orientation, weekly foremen safety meetings, and monthly superintendent meetings.
•Arrange for basic first aid training and ongoing safety education for jobsite personnel.
•Inspect jobsites regularly to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and the Company Safety Program.
•Monitor daily construction activities, identify unsafe behaviors, and empower corrective actions, including the authority to stop unsafe work.
•Coordinate project safety efforts with subcontractors to ensure full site compliance.
•Investigate, document, and analyze all incidents involving bodily injury or property damage.
•Compile and distribute regular safety reports, accident summaries, and trend analyses to management.
•Track, report, and analyze safety metrics using safety management systems or software tools.
•Provide up-to-date information and training to employees regarding changes in safety requirements, procedures, and regulations.
•Identify and support project management personnel who need additional safety assistance, coaching, or corrective action.
•Support continuous improvement by sharing lessons learned and driving proactive safety initiatives.
•Assist Project Managers with project setup and risk assessments during pre-construction phases.
•Ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations, including proper hazardous material handling and disposal.
•Foster a team-centered safety culture built on communication, accountability, and improvement.
•Complete other safety-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
•5+ years of construction safety experience, preferably in heavy civil, highway, or bridge projects.
•Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT standards, and safe construction practices.
•OSHA 30 certification required.
•Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Management, or a related field preferred (but not required).
•Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (such as CSP or CHST) a plus.
•Strong leadership, communication, and motivational skills.
•Ability to develop strong working relationships with field crews, subcontractors, and project management.
•Familiarity with safety management software for incident tracking and reporting preferred.
Special Requirements
•Must be able to pass controlled substance tests upon hire and at all times during employment.
•Must possess, complete and/or maintain all certifications and training necessary to perform duties
•Valid Driver’s License with a clean MVR is required.
•The ability to fluently communicate in both Spanish and English is preferred.
•Proficient with computers and various software packages.
Working Conditions
Field-based work across active construction sites in Colorado, with occasional office meetings. This position spends a significant amount of time in the field.
•Physical ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, reach, and lift as needed.
•Exposure to outdoor weather, dust, noise, and conditions typical of construction sites.
•Ability to work flexible hours depending on project demands.
