Field Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Technician
to support our operations across Western Canada and deliver expert field service to our oil and gas clients.
About the Role
We’re looking for a technically proficient and safety-conscious Field I&E Technician to join our Automation Services team in Calgary. In addition to supporting our services teams, this role is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical, instrumentation, and control systems in the field — with a strong focus on gas compression and well site automation.
You’ll work independently in a field environments, delivering high-quality service, representing Detechtion with professionalism, and ensuring that customer equipment operates safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities
•Install and commission I&E systems on oilfield equipment (e.g., compressor panels, control systems, SCADA).
•Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical wiring, instrumentation, and communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP & RS-485).
•Interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and panel drawings to verify proper setup.
•Inspect, calibrate, and validate field instrumentation and control devices.
•Support integration with Detechtion’s solutions.
•Ensure compliance with all safety standards, company policies, and site protocols.
•Provide exceptional customer service while on-site, including guidance and technical support when needed.
•Travel to various customer locations throughout Alberta and Western Canada as required.
•Maintain vehicle, tools, and PPE in good working condition for daily field readiness.
Qualifications
•High school diploma required; post-secondary certificate/diploma in Electrical or Instrumentation Technology
•3–5 years of experience in I&E, electrical, automation, or field service (oil & gas exposure strongly preferred)
•Familiarity with gas compressors, annunciators, Murphy panels, Spartan Controls, Altronic and PLC systems is a strong asset
•Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills in remote/field conditions
•Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and in high-risk work environments
•Ability to read and interpret technical documents, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
•Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word); SCADA exposure an asset
•Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean abstract
•Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening in accordance with industry and site safety standards. Ongoing random testing may also be required, based on specific client or customer site requirements.
•Must have or be willing to obtain required safety certifications
•Willingness to drive to remote job sites and work extended hours when required by field conditions or project timelines
•Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
