We are seeking an experienced and driven Facility Manager / Chief Power Engineer to join our team and play a foundational leadership role in the safe and efficient operation of a thermal SAGD facility.
Position Summary
Reporting to the VP Operations & Engineering, the Facility Manager / Chief Power Engineer will oversee day-to-day operations of the thermal facility. The successful candidate will bring a proven track record of leadership in operations, with a focus on building high-performing teams, managing budgets, and fostering a safety culture from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
•Provide leadership and direction for the operations team at the thermal oil facility, ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and corporate requirements.
•As Chief Power Engineer, be responsible for all aspects of operations, including steam generation, water treatment, and utilities.
•Lead, coach, and mentor a multidisciplinary operations team, creating a culture of safety, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
•Develop and implement operations strategies, procedures, and standards aligned with company goals and regulatory expectations.
•Oversee and manage operating budgets, production targets, cost control, and performance metrics.
•Champion and drive a strong culture of health, safety, and environmental stewardship across the organization.
•Ensure the facility complies with Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) regulations and other applicable codes and standards.
•Collaborate closely with engineering, maintenance, HSE, and senior leadership teams during the commissioning and early production phases.
•Support the hiring, training, and development of operations personnel during the start-up phase.
•Contribute to the overall project execution and readiness-to-operate planning.
•Participate in emergency response planning and lead operational readiness initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
•First Class Power Engineering Certificate – required and must be valid in the province of Alberta, OR, transferable
•Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in oil and gas operations, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
•Strong understanding of steam plant operations, and utilities management.
•Experience in thermal heavy oil production is an asset, but not necessarily required.
•Experience with onsite power generation (turbine), is an asset
•Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and inspire teams in a start-up or growth environment.
•Solid experience in budgeting, cost control, and operational planning.
•Proven leadership in cultivating a proactive safety-first culture.
•Experience in regulatory compliance, including ABSA, AER, OH&S, and environmental legislation.
•Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
•Familiarity with commissioning and start-up processes is a strong asset.
Working Conditions
