Performs semi-skilled manual work, maintenance and operating duties in connection with power plant operation, as assigned. Job duties may vary, depending on the line-of-progression (Operations, Maintenance or Coal Yard).
- - - Isolates, cleans, opens, replaces, inspects, closes and returns to service strainers, heat exchangers and dust collectors.
- Operates, cleans, services and lubricates portable power-driven tools and equipment. Operates computers and other electronic devices to perform common tasks.
- Maintains tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Utilizes portable meters, analyzers and equipment to conduct tests and monitor equipment.
- Lubricates and checks lubrication and oil filtering equipment; adjusts packing glands as necessary and performs necessary operative maintenance, using appropriate hand tools.
- Operates, regulates, adjusts, cleans and performs minor maintenance on ash handling equipment and other plant auxiliary equipment, including pumps valves, piping and other similar equipment.
- Monitors and inspects plant equipment for normal operation. Identifies and reports abnormal conditions to the proper authority and writes work requests.
- Performs simple disassembly and assembly work; cleans and reconditions parts; lubricates, bolts, unbolts, wire brushes and opens and closes inspection doors.
- Prepares equipment work surfaces and areas by removing insulation guards and simple housings; removes pipe covering and insulation and prepares such surfaces for work.
- Erects and removes simple rigging.
- Performs minor maintenance work on heating and plumbing systems such as repair valves, repair and replace fittings and short sections of piping; cleans and replaces traps and strainers.
- Loads, unloads, moves and handles materials, supplies and equipment; opens boxes, barrels, bags and other materials.
- Operates material handling equipment including hoists, fork-lift trucks, skid steer loaders, small tractors and automotive equipment and their associated equipment and performs duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.
- Performs routine cleaning of plant areas and equipment, including outside areas, as assigned. Cleans oil igniters and nozzles.
- Assists in preparing boilers and auxiliaries for operation and removal from service.
- Monitors coal feed to mills and burners and observes conditions of fires and furnaces.
- Hand lances slag in boilers, hand operates soot blowers, conveys ash, unplugs ash lines, disposes of clinkers, removes pyrites, and other similar work.
- Uses flow diagrams and reference documents to identify system piping and equipment.
- Makes required equipment checks and assists in performing tests and preparing related reports, graphs and curves.
- Trains for and performs duties associated with the Clearance Permit Policy and Procedure.
- Performs duties in accordance with Cardinal Operating Company's (COC) safety rules, operating regulations and practices and reports unsafe conditions and practices. Trains for and carries out assignments in firefighting, first aid and other emergency response programs as required.
- Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Education: Associate degree in engineering, industrial or energy technology; OR Associate degree in another discipline and two (2) years of related work experience; OR high school diploma with four (4) years of related work experience; OR high school diploma with two (2) years of related military experience.

Licenses & Certifications: Successful completion of the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and the Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) tests are required for this position. A review of Employment Testing Information, Test-Taking Tips, together with the POSS and MASS Practice Tests may be helpful.
Abilities & Skills: Must be able to learn the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work. Must be able to learn the tools and equipment and their use and able to read, interpret and work from prints and specifications. Must be able to gain a working knowledge of OSHA and Environmental guidelines as well as all applicable operating instructions and procedures. Additionally, must satisfactorily complete and exhibit competency, in such time frames as may be established by COC, all required training to advance to the Equipment Operator, Maintenance Mechanic-Junior, Coal Handler (depending on the line-of-progression) or vacate the Equipment Operator-Junior classification. A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk; sit; work with hands and fingers; push, pull, reach, and lift objects; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Must have close visual acuity to analyze data, perform inspections, view computer monitors and assemble parts.
This position requires working in extreme heat and cold both in inside and outside environments; environments containing fumes, odors, dust, gases, and high amounts of noise and vibration. Additionally, this position requires the ability to work in close quarters, narrow passageways, at heights, on grating, platforms and catwalks.
