The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for Equipment Mechanic Leader in Lansing, MI, as part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, Local Union 352.

Position Summary
•In addition to performing duties of Journey Equipment Mechanic, provides direction and coordination of maintenance and repair work and ensure productivity of Fleet Services personnel.
Essential Functions
•Ensures a proper level of productivity at all times.
•Prioritizes work in order of most urgent.
•Creates work orders for non-scheduled repairs.
•Makes appropriate parts requests and assists in ordering parts; making certain all necessary information is included.
•Answers phones and takes messages as needed.
•Follows overtime equalization procedures.
•Follows BWL purchasing guidelines.
•Follows and becomes familiar with all BWL policies, Rules of Conduct, safety, emergency evacuation, and accident investigation procedures.
•Informs Planner/Supervisor or Manager of Fleet Services of any problems which may need to be addressed.
•Maintains written, oral or electronic communications between Fleet Services shifts and internal customers regarding vehicle/equipment status and/or needs.
•Reviews daily employee time slips and work orders at the end of the shift to assure accuracy and completeness.
•Secures building area at the end of the shift (shift 3 only).
•Maintains and encourages a positive attitude among employees.
•Facilitates cleanliness and organization of the shop.
•When not performing duties of the EML, will perform journey Equipment Mechanic tasks.
•Attends required training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by BWL, supervisor or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
•Follows BWL Safety Manual and wears personal protective equipment as required.
Job Specifications
•Must be journey Equipment Mechanic.
•Must pass Equipment Mechanic Leader assessment process.
•Must be able to use computer to conduct EML duties.
•Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, oral and written communication skills, and safety consciousness.
•Minimum of seven years’ experience in maintenance of light and heavy over-the-road vehicles as well as construction equipment and small tools.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
•Candidates must possess a valid Ml License with an acceptable driving record.
•Upon hire they must provide proof of successful completion of the State of Ml written portion of the Commercial Driver’s License (COL) examination with Class A and N endorsements and pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.
•Within 6 months of the date of hire they must successfully pass the Ml CDL skills/road.
•Internal applicants must currently possess valid Ml COL with required endorsements or at minimum, pass DOT physical exam and State of Ml written portion of COL examination within 15 days of transfer.
•Individuals will be subject to DOT requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), including random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.
Physical Requirements
•Job requires ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds to waist level with moderate lifting and carrying of 50 pounds to shoulder level.
•Job requires work from various awkward positions including lying down and the ability to bend, stoop, twist, push and pull.
•Some work requires reaching overhead.
•Job requires working at heights while on ladders or in aerial trucks up to 77 feet.
•Adequate vision required to drive vehicles and read shop manuals and sketches.
•Must be able to communicate clearly with others, whether in conversation or in writing.
•Must be able to complete work using a computer.
•Must be able to work in confined spaces.
•Must be able to distinguish colors (gold, gray, orange, red, green and yellow) to electrically troubleshoot and wire vehicles and equipment.
Working Conditions

•Occasionally exposed to mud and dust.
•Occasional exposure to noise levels requiring hearing protection.
