Annual salary: $ 127,900.00 - 161,800.00


What you'll do


The Protection, Control and Telecommunications Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro’s Protection

& Control systems and Telecommunication Networks, and ensuring these systems contribute to safe and reliable operation

of BC Hydro’s electric system while meeting performance requirements of system planners, regulators customers and other


stakeholders.


The division provides engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, construction documentation, and

engineering oversight of work done by engineering service partners. We provide technical support during procurement,

construction, testing and commissioning, and provide asset lifecycle support with critical failure analysis and emergency

operational support for restoring customer supply in the event of forced outages. The division is responsible for deploying

and sustaining numerous regulatory bulk electric system standards, including cybersecurity standards for Industrial Control


and Telecommunication systems.


We have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Team Lead for the SCADA Design – Transmission team in the P&C

Design department. The Team Lead is responsible for SCADA engineering design processes, project resourcing and

deliverables for capital and maintenance projects affecting SCADA assets, including engineering standards and processes,

work forecasting, resource assignments, work package agreements (scope, estimates, schedule, deliverables),

commissioning acceptance, and providing technical support in resolving operational issues. The Team Lead will manage a

team of 8-12 of engineers, technologists, and augmentation contractors and report to the P&C Design Department Manager


at Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.


Working closely with other Engineering teams, the Team Lead will provide a safe workplace, people leadership, technical

guidance, and work management for the team and carry out the following duties:


Manages team performance to meet quality and delivery objectives. Implements and monitors quality management

processes to ensure adherence to regulatory, BC Hydro and industry standards and practices. Ensures Owner’s Engineer


responsibilities are met.

Provides leadership, support, and advice to team members, encourages their work initiative, and helps them grow as

engineers and technical leaders. Demonstrates BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workforce.

Provides technical leadership and acts as a knowledgeable technical resource responsible for providing professional/

technical advice in engineering and projects within and outside the department. Prepares or reviews technical reports,

presentations, standards, specifications, guides, or other such documents that provide engineering expertise.

Demonstrates a strong commitment to safety. Creates a team culture where employees are recognized for safe

performance, safe work practices, and compliance with safety regulations, and ensures team members have appropriate


safety training for their work tasks.

Ensures that qualified resources with appropriate skills, experience and tools are available to meet work program

commitments. Assigns resources to projects within the work program, coordinates work activities, and ensures quality


management practices are followed.

Coaches and mentors team members, reviews technical work, and manages team performance to meet objectives and


improve department effectiveness and efficiency.

Leads a component of the engineering standards program related to SCADA assets. Works with peers, technical leads,

and standards engineers in the development, review, and publishing of engineer standards to support the work program,

compliance processes and requirements, and asset lifecycle sustainment objectives.

Advocates for professional practice and ensure team members are knowledgeable about professional practice

requirements and that their work complies with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.

Builds and maintains strong relationships with other Engineering teams, and business areas within Integrated Planning,

Project Delivery, Operations and External Service Providers to advance the delivery of BC Hydro’s overall work plan.

Chairs meetings to address engineering problems, attends and addresses seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences,

and prepares and delivers presentations to various audiences.

What you bring

A degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably power engineering or control and communications) recognized by Canadian


Universities.

Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British


Columbia (EGBC).

A minimum of 10 years working experience in relevant engineering fields with 8 years of experience in the engineering,


design, and implementation of Utility SCADA systems.

Strong ability to communicate efficiently including verbal and technical writing in the English language, analytical,


interpersonal communication, and presentation skills.

Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.



The successful candidate shall demonstrate:


In depth technical knowledge in the design and implementation of Utility SCADA systems, including SCADA network

architectures, communication networks and protocols, SCADA & network equipment, application software, and diagnostics


tools.

Technical knowledge in the associated protection, control, and communication systems, and operating requirements of


components used to build such a system.

Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are of a challenging and


unusual nature.

Effectiveness in work leadership with ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects, and plan and manage project


resources.

Experience with project management principles managing the engineering component (scope, schedule, cost, technical


risk) of large and/or technically complex projects.

Ability to manage client relationships to ensure their needs are met and to work closely with stakeholders to drive

innovation, find engineering solutions that add value and to reach consensus.

Prior team leadership experience is an asset.
Prior program or asset management experience is an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to work three days per week from the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.
The successful candidate will be required to do traveling to sites and locations within BC, including remote locations and


sometimes outside of the province/country.

A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain a Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing.
