Engineering Intern

The District provides water, wastewater, recycled water and park and recreation services to over 100,000 residents in the East San Diego County communities of Santee, El Cajon, Lakeside, Flinn Springs, Harbison Canyon, Blossom Valley, Alpine, Dehesa and Crest. Our infrastructure is worth over $700 million and we have an annual budget of $76.3 million.

The Intern will report to the Engineering Department which is comprised of two divisions Development Services and Capital Improvements Program (CIP). The successful candidate will perform and support routine technical engineering tasks. The Development Services Division is responsible for reviewing development plans and assisting developers, engineers, and property owners through the planning, approval, and installation of new water, sewer, and recycled water facilities. The CIP Division is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of Padre Dam’s capital projects. The goal of this division is to manage capital projects efficiently to ensure District standards are achieved within budget.

Essential Duties

1. The Engineering Intern will perform and support routine technical engineering tasks related to the Development Services and CIP Divisions.

2. Tasks may include: research information for water, recycled water, and sewer projects: working with customer inquiries about water and sewer service applications; easement checks; construction meters; drafting by hand or using District software; monitoring of private development applications; and preliminary engineering support for CIP staff.

Knowledge, Skills, Training, Experience & Licensing

Knowledge Required:

1. Basic knowledge of mathematical concepts, including Algebra, Analytical Geometry and Trigonometry.

2. The ability to read and interpret geographical data

3. Computer skills using Microsoft Office Software on a Windows Operating System.

Training/Experience & Licensing Required:

1. Applicants enrolled in an Engineering program at a community college, technical school, or accredited postsecondary education institution: pursuing a degree in Engineering (Civil, Construction, Environmental) and/or Water Resources Management.

2. Valid California Driver’s license

3. High School Diploma or GED

4. AutoCAD, GIS, and BlueBeam preferred

Supplemental Information

The schedule for this internship will be Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am-4pm, 12-18 hours per week. The Internship will likely start in June and be approximately 6-12 months. Specific days/times will be coordinated with current coursework.
