What you’ll do
The Standards Engineer or Engineer Associate, Standards is responsible for the development, maintenance, and approval of distribution construction standards, material specifications, relevant policies and procedures, and provision of technical advice related to their application.
- Assist with the approval process for the use of new distribution standards, design guidelines and materials including the approval of the application of standards and guidelines in overhead and underground capital construction projects.
- Ensure selection of materials and equipment for incorporation into distribution standards meet practical, financial, and technical requirements
- Review and approve construction deviation requests in accordance with the requirements of Ontario Regulation 22/04.
- Ensures the equipment/materials approval information and bills of material for standards are entered properly in Alectra’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to allow other departments to purchase approved equipment/materials and create work orders for construction projects
- Co-ordinates the investigation of equipment failures both with internal departments and manufacturers as necessary in order to rectify the problems and further enhance product quality.
- Complies with all Federal and Provincial legislation and standards, including Ont. Reg. 22/04 and incorporates the spirit and intent of all regulatory/legal standards in approvals and communications
- Investigates and evaluates new developments in technologies, materials and standards within the industry for applicability of use
- Consults with staff in other departments and liaises with representatives of outside organizations to share information and resolve technical problems
- Analyzes, develops, reviews, checks, and updates standards drawings (current or new) in order to complete the standards manual in preparation for audits
- Assist with the review of certified transformer and other major equipment test reports and material change requests.
- Reviews and approves manufacturer’s shop drawings.
- Provides technical expertise in the planning, design and implementation of projects and key initiatives
- Identifies opportunities to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery
- Creates comprehensive written reports, plans and presentations for Senior Management consideration. Provide recommendations and sensitivity analysis of options and alternative solutions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Who you are
Education & Specialized Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or recognized equivalent
- A registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) in good standing is preferred
- Knowledge of emerging trends and industry best practices
- Knowledge of regulatory, governmental and environmental requirements (OEB Rules and Regulations, PIPEDA, OH&S, EUSA Rules, WHMIS and TDG Act)
- Knowledge of technical and safety specifications/standards including CSA, CEA and Ontario Regulation 22/04, Utility Work Protection Code
- Strong knowledge of Project Management methodologies
- Working knowledge of computer software programs such as Cyme Dist, Cyme TCC,Cyme Cap, AutoCAD, Hexagon GIS, JD Edwards is an asset
- Proficiency with MS Office applications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with electrical distribution systems is an asset
- Experience in a unionized utility environment is an asset
- Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions to complex technical issues
- Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information in an organized and concise way
- Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
