What is an Engineer – Electric Substation Design?
A Substation Design Engineer performs engineering assignments related to planning/scoping, design, and project construction management of the various projects related to Central Hudson’s system.
What does an Engineer – Electric Substation Design do?
- Performs design work for electric substations & related facilities.
- Demonstrates the ability to carry small/medium ESD projects from start to finish, including cost estimates, Work Order Authorization, DIG approval, equipment and site technical specifications, bidding and selection process, equipment ordering/contractor selection, drawing mark-up, drawing completion by Drafting, wire-checking and transmittal to Substation Operations and construction assistance. On project completion, approve as-built changes and file the project and the instruction books
- Performs all duties and develops all plans & designs in a manner that recognizes safety for self, fellow employees, and the general public
- Displays a thorough understanding of ESD procedures, processes, and guidelines.
- Displays an in-depth understanding of corporate procedures and processes and demonstrates the ability to properly follow them as applicable in every assignment
- Demonstrates technical knowledge regarding Electric Substation Design.
- Identifies and promotes innovative solutions to engineering problems and/or productivity enhancements to existing processes
- Develops a positive working relationship and works collaboratively with Electric System Protection and Substation Operations personnel to carryout projects from start to finish.
- Works effectively in teams with Drafting, Substation Operations and Electric System Protection personnel to produce constructible work packages needed to support the capital plan and any emergent work requiring ESD support
- Shares information, develops technical knowledge, and offers guidance, and/or training on complex topics to other employees
- Demonstrates improvement with each assignment and an ability to incorporate multiple unscheduled projects and assignments into the work plan without negative impacts to previously assigned goals
- Represents Central Hudson in industry activities and organizations (NYISO, EPRI, NYSRC, NPCC, etc.)
- Possesses refined communication skills, written and verbal, necessary to report issues and recommendations in an objective, clear, and concise manner to peers, supervisors, and managers
- Strives for continuous improvement and respectfully challenges the ideas of colleagues and supervisors
- Provides support for storm restoration efforts
What does it take to be a Substation Design Engineer?
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical mechanical or civil engineering
- Strong analytical, organizational, and quantitative skills
- Well-developed written/verbal communication skills are required to work independently and/or as a group in order to perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
- Possess the inter-personal skills necessary to maintain effective working relationships with and to be responsive to customers, fellow employees, and all of the Company’s external relationships
- Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with innovation in mind
- Valid driver’s license
- Field of study focused on power
- Experience working in the regulated utility industry

This position has a career path which allows for advancement opportunities within a job series. The title and level are commensurate with experience. Pay range: $81,300– $193,200
