POSITION SUMMARY:
This position will work closely with experienced electrical and instrumentation reliability engineers in managing electrical & instrumentation (E&I) reliability at Marathon's Detroit Refinery. The role involves contributing to budgeting for planned equipment replacements, troubleshooting existing issues, implementing new solutions, and helping to develop new reliability programs aimed at achieving longer run-times and safer operations. Success in this position requires significant teamwork, with extensive collaboration and interfacing across all refinery departments and various corporate entities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Listed below are the responsibilities of the Electrical & Instrumentation Reliability Engineer position:
Electrical
•Support area team reliability engineers with new projects and troubleshooting equipment issues.
•Support new engineering projects for start-up and create new PM programs for new equipment.
•Lead effort to upgrade obsolete equipment, including VFD’s, UPS systems, heat trace controllers, protective relays, and control panels.
•Manage the refinery’s heat tracing system, serving as the primary owner for the heat trace network.
•Manage temporary power in the refinery.
Instrumentation
•Support Mechanical Integrity Program for critical devices such as Safety Instrumented Systems, Rotating Equipment Protection, and Independent Protection Layers including management of preventative maintenance programs and testing procedures.
•Work collaboratively with multiple disciplines to analyze instrumentation and analyzer failure trends and conduct detailed root cause analysis. Recommend and implement appropriate corrective actions to maximize equipment availability and reliability.
•Design instrumentation and analyzer improvement strategies to effectively close gaps and ensure alignment with long-term operational objectives, corporate specifications and conformity with industry standards and best practices.
•Develop and maintain equipment “Bad Actor” list for the refinery to identify assets which impact production/reliability. Identify and implement appropriate corrective action.
•Provide technical/troubleshooting assistance in resolving instrumentation and analyzer design, operation, and maintenance problems; contact internal and external experts as required
•Develop in-house construction packages for Reliability initiatives.
General
•Review equipment history to identify bad actor equipment with high maintenance cost or high cost of downtime. Champion development of corrective solutions and cost justification for reliability improvements to bad actors.
•Develop and manage maintenance/reliability driven programs to maintain the integrity of equipment and facilities.
•Ensure preventive maintenance plans are established for equipment and seek ways to implement predictive maintenance activities.
•Provide quality assurance, technical support, compliance, and consistent application of MPC and industry standards, specifications, and procedures to Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, and Planning for new and existing equipment installation.
•Ensure Management of Change (MOC) process is followed for changes initiated by maintenance and reliability. Ensure equipment repairs and new installations are properly documented, spare parts list maintained, and equipment specific information updated.
•Lead or participate in maintenance, reliability, or equipment-related incident investigations.
•Utilize reliability tools such as failure evaluations, Root Cause Analysis, and cost analysis to improve reliability of equipment.
•Write recommendations for equipment upgrades including financial justification (life cycle cost analysis) and assist in project development.
•Develop and review turnaround work lists and scopes for electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
•Lead multi-department investigation teams to solve recurring electrical and instrumentation failures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required from an accredited college.
•Minimum 2 years electrical and instrumentation engineering experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry required.
•Experience in refining with maintenance/reliability experience preferred.
•Strong Interpersonal leadership and collaboration skills essential.
•Effective communication skills as this position will be required to mentor and build consensus throughout the refinery.
•Able to work off-hour duties such as plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
