Saginaw Power & Automation (SPA) is a systems integrator and electrical services provider founded in 2014 in Saginaw, MN. We specialize in engineering and engineered products for heavy industry, oil & gas, and municipal clients across the U.S. Our multidisciplinary team includes licensed engineers, EITs, project managers, technicians, designers, and support staff.
We’re now expanding into the Minneapolis–St. Paul area and are seeking a local Electrical Engineer to support this growth and join our dynamic team.
Position Description
As an Electrical Engineer at SPA, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality electrical engineering solutions across a variety of projects. This position involves collaborating with internal teams and customers to develop control systems, support equipment design and testing, and contribute to field commissioning efforts. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of their work, and is comfortable managing both technical and project execution responsibilities.
This is a hands-on, multi-faceted role that requires a balance of engineering design, problem-solving, field work, and project coordination.
Key Responsibilities
•Create electrical design packages for industrial clients (Oil & Gas, Mining, Energy, etc.).
•Perform calculations and analyses for electrical systems.
•Collaborate with internal teams to build and test electrical equipment.
•Troubleshoot and upgrade control systems.
•Visit customer sites for field verification and commissioning (up to 30% travel).
•Develop clear technical documentation and project reports.
•Ensure all designs prioritize safety, reliability, maintainability, and future scalability.
•Identify process improvements and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
•This is an in-person role based in the Twin Cities area
Preferred Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).
•5+ years of experience in industrial or consulting settings.
•Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and relevant engineering tools.
•Proven ability to independently execute at least two of the following:
•Power system model development including coordination and arc flash hazard analysis using SKM or similar
•Control system design (e.g., P&IDs, loop diagrams, panel layouts)
•PLC/HMI programming and configuration
•Construction or commissioning management
•Field commissioning and troubleshooting
•Project Coordination – managing schedules, tracking deliverables, and coordinating team contributions
•Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
•PE licensure (or the ability to obtain PE licensure within a reasonable time frame).
Responsibilities
•Work with project teams to create electrical design packages for customers in the industrial sector (Oil & Gas, Mining, Energy, etc.).
•Complete calculations and analyses of electrical systems.
•Work with internal technicians and design personnel with the building and testing of electrical equipment in house.
•FAT testing with technicians and customers
•Troubleshoot and upgrade control systems.
•Traveling to customer sites to provide field verifications and commission equipment.
•Preparing written reports and project documents.
•Make considerations when designing and implementing control and power systems related to the following: Economy, safety, reliability, quality, sustainability, maintainability, and expansion related to customer needs.
•Identify areas of improvement and add to the team environment.
•Work will include up to 30% travel throughout the US on average for commissioning and field verification activities.
