Assignment Description
The Drilling Engineer is a responsible for supporting technical excellence and the delivery of drilling programs for both subsea and platform operations. The role involves developing and optimizing well designs and managing critical project interfaces to meet regulatory, safety, and operational objectives. The Staff Drilling Engineer provides specialized expertise in well integrity management, risk mitigation, and contractor oversight, ensuring seamless project execution and regulatory compliance. This role includes supporting offshore operations, leading cross-functional technical integration, and mentoring junior staff to foster a culture of continuous improvement. Through innovative technology adoption and strategic project management, the Staff Drilling Engineer contributes significantly to overall project success and organizational value creation.
Responsibilities:
Works within a team comprised of the Client's staff, engineering contractors, service contractors and the Atlantic Region Operations and SSDCI teams to ensure Atlantic Region well delivery objectives are achieved. Reports to the Manager, Drilling in the Atlantic Region, Subsurface Drilling Completions Interventions Department.
Responsible for development of all technical deliverables with respect to the planning, scheduling, design and financial aspects of Atlantic Region Completion and Intervention related operations, including platform and subsea based operations.
Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to;
Well Design and Planning:•Develop and optimize wellbore trajectories with service partner, incorporating horizontal, high-angle, and extended reach wells to achieve efficient resource development.
•Ensure robust well designs that meet C-NLOER regulations, industry standards, and company objectives.
•Lead the preparation of well programs, risk assessments, and technical documentation to support drilling operations.
•Adhere to the Well Design and Execution Procedure and implement learnings and improvements to support leaning process.
Technical Integration and Interface Management:
•Oversee and support the WWR Platform DCI Well Delivery Team to ensure seamless integration of well designs with topsides facilities and subsea infrastructure.
•Coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as geologists and production engineers, to address technical interfaces and resolve engineering challenges.
Well Integrity and Risk Mitigation:
•Involved in well integrity evaluations, providing support for assessing and mitigating risks related to wellbore stability, pressure management, and collision avoidance.
•Develop and implement comprehensive integrity management programs to maintain wellbore health and operational safety.
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation:
•Compile and manage regulatory submissions, including well licensing documentation, design approvals, and end-of-well reports.
•Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards, keeping abreast of changing legislation and industry best practices.
Operational Support and Offshore Engagement:
•Provide shore-based technical support to ongoing operations, with potential for offshore site visits to offer hands-on support and troubleshoot issues.
•Act as a key liaison between the drilling team and offshore operations to facilitate smooth project execution
Performance Management and Cost Control:
•Develop time and cost estimates for well construction programs and monitor budgets to ensure project financial objectives are met.
•Develop and monitor drilling KPIs throughout design and execution phase. Optimize daily performance during operations and implement learnings into future wells to support technical limit philosophy.
Technology Evaluation and Implementation:
•Evaluate, recommend, and integrate drilling technologies and innovative solutions to enhance well design, improve safety, and drive efficiency.
•Implement technologies that push technical limits, optimize well performance, and minimize project risks.
Project Support and Strategic Planning:
•Collaborate with project teams to develop comprehensive drilling programs, ensuring alignment with operational goals and safety standards.
•Contribute to the development of long-term strategies for drilling operations, focusing on sustainability and efficiency.
Contract Management and Oversight:
•Oversee third-party service partners for key drilling services (e.g., Directional Drilling & Measurement, Drilling Fluids, Casing Services).
•Support the preparation and review of Expression of Interests (EOI), Invitations to Bid (ITB), and contractual terms & conditions to support well services and equipment selection, as required.
Training and Mentorship:
•Mentor junior engineers, EITs and co-op students, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
Management System Development & Oversight:
•Develop and/or revise management system documentation, including design standards, operating procedures, and policies. Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities to enhance drilling and operational processes.
Emergency Response and Preparedness:
•Adherence to the Source Control Response Plan as it relates to relief well planning and well design considerations.
•Oversee contingency planning and operational preparedness.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
•Work closely with geologists, production engineers, and HSE teams to ensure an integrated approach to drilling challenges. Facilitate effective communication and alignment with internal and external stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

Qualifications:
•Undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering discipline
•Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with PEGNL
•5+ years of engineering experience in the oil and gas industry, with skilled expertise in all aspects of well design planning, including collision avoidance, survey programming, casing, cement and fluids design.
•Experience that includes exposure to an offshore and/or harsh weather subsea and platform development drilling operations.
•Competent in well integrity areas of well construction and operational execution.
o Competent with well planning software (tubing design, TAD modelling, hydraulics modelling)
o Experience in Drilling Well planning software including Landmark or equivalent (StressCheck and Well Plan software)
o Exposure and working knowledge of @Risk software and probabilistic time estimation techniques.
o Time and cost / AFE development, including @Risk software and probabilistic time estimation techniques.
•This position may require the successful candidate travel offshore periodically, medical clearance and required training necessary for offshore travel.
•Consistent with the Accords Act, residents of Newfoundland and Labrador specifically and Canada generally, who are qualified, will be given first consideration for training and employment.

•Experience that includes exposure to an offshore and/or harsh weather subsea and platform development environment.
•Knowledge of current the Client's Atlantic Region operations, and offshore activities in the Jeanne D’Arc Basin in general.
