Reporting to the Manager, Vancouver Island Operations, the Distribution Design Co-op Student is primarily responsible for designing and drafting underground and overhead electrical distribution infrastructure. This is a 4 OR 8-month term, starting September 2025.
Responsibilities:•Design of underground and overhead medium voltage electrical distribution infrastructure (4kV – 25kV).
•Material take-offs and project estimating.
•Transformer loading, voltage drop, and cable pull calculations.
•Reviewing 3rd party drawings such as civil, architectural, landscape, and on-site electrical to coordinate and eliminate design conflicts.
•Creating and updating automation macros using VBA programming.
•Preparing technical documentation.
•Site visits to field-verify or inspect civil and electrical power infrastructure.
•Project schedule management and tracking.
•Research and application of engineering standards and codes.
•Design coordination with customers, municipal authorities, other utilities & various project stakeholders.
•Other duties as required.
Qualifications of the ideal candidate:
•Successful completion of at least one year of an engineering program at an accredited university or college (electrical or civil preferred).
•Strong collaborative skills and willingness to liaise with other roles (project managers, designers, drafters, materials and construction vendors, survey, and marketing) to ensure projects are accurate, compliant, on time, and on budget.
•Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office 365.
•Experience working in the civil or electric utility industry.
•Familiarity with BC Hydro design and construction standards would be an asset.
•Class 5 driver’s license.
