Overview:
The Director of Training and Development is responsible for building and leading an integrated learning strategy that supports both field operations and corporate management across our electrical construction business. This role drives the design, delivery, and governance of scalable learning programs—ensuring that employees from the field to the office are equipped with the skills, leadership, and safety standards required to excel.
Essential Functions
• Training & Development Program Design: 40%
•Leads the strategy, design, and execution of training programs across both operational (field) and management (office) roles.
•Develops structured onboarding programs for both field crews and corporate employees, ensuring new hires reach productivity faster and with fewer safety incidents.
•Implements leadership development pipelines for crew leads, foremen, supervisors, and managers.
•Builds and manages role-based learning paths and upskilling programs.
• Cross Functional Collaboration & Alignment: 40%
•Establishes cross-functional governance to align learning priorities with business goals, field demands, and safety requirements.
•Collaborates with Operations, Safety, Labor, and HR to create training that improves field readiness, compliance, and project delivery.
•Collaborates with senior leadership to identify skills gaps and prioritize training needs for maximum business impact.
•Fosters strong alignment between Training & Development, Operations, Safety, HR, and Executive Leadership.
• Systems, Tools, & Communication: 10%
•Participates in the selection, deployment, and adoption of learning platforms, tools, and systems.
•Develops effective communications by using tools and techniques that resonate with Alterman employees and teams.
•Works with leadership and management to identify, prioritize, develop, and publish functional and cross-functional standards.
• Evaluation, Culture, & Change Management: 10%
•Tracks and analyzes training outcomes, engagement, and ROI across business units.
•Supports a culture of continuous improvement and career growth across the company.
•Works with senior leaders to make change management principles an integral part of their strategic and tactical planning thought process.
Education And Experience
•8+ years of experience in training, organizational development, or workforce development required.
•NCCER Certification, DOL Registered Apprenticeship (RA) Program Design Experience, or Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) preferred.
•Experience supporting both skilled trades and management functions required.
•Strong background in program design, adult learning principles, and leadership development required.
•Practical background for overseeing apprenticeship programs or skills training.
•Experience in construction, utilities, or skilled trades environments preferred.
Skills/Abilities
•Strategic thinking skills with tactical execution ability.
•Exceptional communication and facilitation skills. Able to effectively communicate with various audiences from jobsite to boardroom.
•Strong project management and organizational skills.
•Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, or other related software.
•Familiar with managing LMS platforms, mobile learning tools, or blended learning environments.
•Data-driven approach with the ability to tie training to business results.
•Able to collaborate with and build trust across departments and functions.
Work Environment
•Office environment with some travel required.
Physical Demands
•Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
•Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
