Summary:
The Director, Environmental Services is responsible for leading the environmental, land, and sustainability functions within Martin Marietta’s East Division. This includes ensuring the effective implementation and continuous improvement of environmental policies, programs, and practices across the division. The role also ensures alignment with Martin Marietta’s corporate policies while managing all permitting and compliance activities in accordance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and standards. Aligned with our Company values, a key responsibility of this role is to identify and apply best practices to enhance environmental stewardship across the division. Additionally, the role supports division objectives related to land acquisitions, property leases, and the strategic use of real estate. The Director leads an internal team of environmental and land professionals who are based in various regions throughout the division’s footprint. This position reports directly to the East Division President.
The East Division is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and operates a network of more than 100 aggregates production and distribution facilities across nine U.S. states, the Bahamas, and Canada. Success in this role requires strong technical expertise in environmental and land disciplines, along with excellent communication, leadership, and management skills.
Primary Responsibilities•Maintain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of environmental regulations, legislation, and industrial processes across the division.
•Provide leadership, guidance, and strategic direction to environmental and plant personnel to maintain and enhance compliance policies and procedures.
•Manage external engineering consultants while optimizing internal capabilities and costs.
•Monitor and analyze proposed regulations from draft through final implementation to mitigate compliance burdens and reduce costs to the division.
•Design and recommend cost-effective compliance strategies that align with regulatory requirements and operational goals.
•Direct the training and professional development of environmental staff, ensuring readiness for evolving and newly implemented regulations.
•Develop and implement training programs, materials, and procedures to ensure full compliance with all permit conditions.
•Conduct regular site evaluations and provide hands-on support to environmental and operational teams.
•Assist operations in preparing capital requests for environmental improvements, implementing permit requirements, and fulfilling regulatory reporting obligations.
•Actively participate in national and state industry associations.
•Manage the acquisition of land and environmental-related permits, authorizations, and agreements in partnership with legal and other support functions.
•Lead land personnel in the acquisition and divestiture of properties, overseeing due diligence, valuation, negotiation, and capital request processes to maximize real estate value.
•Develop and implement strategies to foster sustainable relationships with regulators, community leaders, neighbors, and public stakeholders through proactive consultation and engagement initiatives.
Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Mining, Geology, or a related technical or engineering field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
•Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
•Additional education or training in legal, regulatory policy, or sustainability is a plus.
•10–15+ years of professional experience in an environmental leadership role is preferred, as is a working knowledge of the aggregates industry and relevant environmental regulations.
•8–10+ years of experience in people management is required.
•Broad understanding of scientific principles and project management practices related to environmental and land stewardship.
•Proven experience in developing, implementing, and enhancing environmental compliance strategies.
•In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to environmental protection, land use, and zoning.
•Strong project management, organizational, analytical, and communication skills are required.
•Demonstrated ability to negotiate effectively and align stakeholders to drive positive change.
•Highly effective leadership capabilities with a track record of building strong relationships with divisional and corporate leaders, along with external stakeholders.
•Self-motivated and capable of working independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
•Strong organizational skills and prioritization skills to ensure tasks meet deadlines.
•Willingness and ability to travel approximately 30% of the time, occasionally internationally.
