Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic
Position Summary
Diesel and Equipment Mechanic performs preventative maintenance and necessary repairs on both heavy equipment and small engines, ensuring functionality and reliability of machinery, vehicles and other construction and shop equipment.
This has been designated as a safety-sensitive job because it involves performing one or more tasks/duties that could reasonably affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task(s) and others.
Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions
•Schedule, coordinate and conduct routine inspections on vehicles and heavy equipment.
•Schedule, coordinate and perform preventative maintenance, e.g. clean and grease machinery and vehicles, change oils/fluids, tighten or loosen miscellaneous components, etc.
•Perform repairs, both onsite and in the field
•Conduct diagnostic tests to troubleshoot issues.
•Identify worn or damaged parts.
•Install component/part upgrades.
•Rebuild components when possible.
•Address vehicle and machine issues by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
•Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives and adjusting controls and systems.
•Comply with federal and state vehicle requirements.
•Maintain vehicle records by tracking services and repairs.
•Oversee the reduction of costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
•Keep shop equipment operating by following proper usage instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; performing preventative maintenance; calling for repairs if necessary.
•Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
•Diagnose/troubleshoot various parts/components failure/malfunction on the equipment, i.e., transmission, engines, drain lines, rear axles, gear boxes, hydraulic, electrical, steering systems, brake system.
•Read truck and body wiring schematics.
•Weld components necessary for repair of equipment and/or fabrication of components parts necessary for repair of equipment
•Operate service truck - may have to make service calls to diagnose/repair disabled machinery/vehicles in the field.
•Fill out work orders describing in detail the problem, solution and parts used in the repair of the unit.
•Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users.
•Keep logs of work and report on issues.
•May perform other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, Behaviors
•Education: High School or equivalent
•Experience: 3 year diesel mechanic experience preferred, but not required
•License/Certification: Class A CDL Preferred
•In depth knowledge of heavy equipment/diesel machinery and hydraulic, electrical, and other systems and their components
•Aptitude in using various hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers etc.) and precision measurement tools, e.g., calipers.
•Know how to operate shop tools, e.g., power drill, power saw, other related power tools, air tools, chipping guns and scalers, impact guns, cutting torch and gas welding equipment, etc.
•Ability to follow established procedures and practices and read instructions, blueprints etc.
•A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines

•Must adhere to company, state and federal safety requirements.
•Must be able to work in a team environment and assist co-workers and supervisors with other duties as required.
•Must be at least 18 years of age.
•Must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug screens.
•Must have manual dexterity and great attention to detail.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
· Ability to manually lift a maximum of 50 pounds. Manual lifting over 50 pounds requires 2 or more people.
· Ability to manipulate weight in excess of 50 pounds, using equipment such as dollies, machine lifts, etc.
· Physical activities could include standing, lifting, twisting, turning and climbing.
· We operate in all seasons. Dress appropriately for current weather conditions.
· Over the road driving that may include inclement weather and hazardous road conditions.
· Exposure to extreme cold or hot temperatures while working outside.
· Driving to/from and presence at job sites to repair downed equipment will occur.
