Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON)-Ignace area as the site for our Deep Geological Repository for used nuclear fuel.
Development Student – Corporate Communications
1 Position Available
Position Location: The position is based out of our Toronto Office at St. Clair/Yonge.
Employment Period: 8 months (August 4, 2025 - April 30, 2026)
Job Summary:
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Developmental Communications Student placement. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will support communications activities across the department, focusing on project management using Wrike.
The Communications team operates in a fast-paced, creative environment and interacts with teams across the business. We are a not-for-profit organization implementing a large long-term national environmental infrastructure project that will last multiple generations. These roles are based in our Toronto headquarters at Yonge and St. Clair, in the same building as the St Clair subway stop.
Responsibilities
•Support communication operations and activities, including keeping projects up to date using Wrike software, learning and supporting media relations, event planning, internal communications, budget management, website and social media activations and overall corporate communications.
•Provide project management to support the department by developing and maintaining workback schedules in Wrike as needed.
•Participate in the collation and management of communication creation and reporting. Assist with evolving our metrics dashboard and activity tracking for ongoing project management and reporting.
•Collaborate within and across internal teams for project completion and communication planning.
•We operate a full-service communications team within the NWMO, and to the extent time allows beyond the duties described above, the co-op student may be assigned to support other communications activities.
Qualifications and Experience
•An active registered student in a post-secondary program focusing on communications, project management, or financial-oriented studies.
•A quick learner that can work independently and as part of a team.
•Familiar with the principles of good communications and project management using digital tools.
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – written and verbal.
•Excellent computer skills – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
•Working knowledge of social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and X would be considered an asset.
Preferred
Program Eligibility:
•Students must be returning full-time to their program at their university following the completion of their work term or be full-time students requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.
•Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.
•Hybrid Work: Students must be able to work a minimum of 3 days in the Office Location, with Wednesday being a required day in office. Students must be available to work full-time, 35 hours per week during business hours 8:30 am – 5 pm.
