About This Job

Marine Designer

Job Purpose and Position Overview:

The Marine Designer is a critical member of the design and procurement teams, responsible for developing vessel structures, systems, and outfitting details. This role emphasizes the creation and maintenance of detailed 3D models and accurate bills of material to support efficient vessel construction. The designer will apply practical marine knowledge and CAD skills to support vessel layout, outfitting, and systems design in close coordination with engineers, production staff, and vendors.

Key Responsibilities:

Use Rhino (or similar CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) to develop detailed 3D models and 2D production drawings.

Develop arrangements, equipment layouts, and production documentation for vessel systems, structural components, and outfitting.
Interpret design proposals, general arrangements, and customer specifications to translate design intent into practical production-ready models.
Assist in the design of hulls, decks, superstructures, and related outfitting to ensure functionality, safety, and ease of construction.
Lay out and detail system components, such as propulsion lines, HVAC, piping (bilge, ballast, firefighting, fuel, potable water), and auxiliary systems.
Coordinate with engineers on the specification and installation of mechanical equipment, including engines, pumps, shafts, and propellers.
Support testing, installation, and maintenance planning by producing accurate design documentation.
Collaborate with procurement to ensure selected materials and components meet design and budget goals.
Regularly engage with production teams to ensure design intent aligns with practical construction methods and constraints.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

Demonstrated expertise with Rhino 3D and 2D drafting software. Experience with other platforms (e.g., ShipConstructor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Orca3D) is a plus.
Strong understanding of shipyard processes, fabrication methods, and marine system integration.
Familiarity with class society requirements and marine industry standards (e.g., ABS, DNV).
Ability to read and interpret schematics, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and technical drawings.
Practical experience designing or working on small to medium-sized commercial or recreational vessels.
Strong spatial reasoning and mechanical aptitude.
Basic knowledge of marine electrical and propulsion systems is a plus.

Core Competencies:

Communication Skills: Ability to clearly convey design intent to engineers, production staff, and vendors.
Team Collaboration: Works well in multi-disciplinary teams and adapts to feedback from engineering and fabrication leads.
Problem-Solving: Approaches design challenges with creativity and an understanding of practical constraints.
Attention to Detail: Produces accurate models and drawings critical for production efficiency.
Time Management: Meets project deadlines through effective prioritization and organizational skills.
Hands-On Mindset: Willingness to be present on-site, interact with fabricators, and adapt designs based on field conditions.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

This role suits a self-motivated designer who enjoys solving practical design challenges, has a keen interest in vessels and marine systems, and thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment. Strong curiosity, attention to detail, and pride in workmanship are essential. Successful designers at our company work closely with production and understand that good design makes boatbuilding faster, easier, and safer.
