PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Supervisor-Custodians or designee, keeps work area, bathrooms, breakrooms, and office sections in clean and orderly condition.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Sweeps, mops, shampoos, strips, waxes, and buffs floors. Cleans offices, meeting rooms, work areas, halls, and stairways using hand and power equipment. Empties and cleans trash and recycle receptacles, ash trays, and other containers. Cleans and polishes furniture and floors.
2. Cleans parking area. Collects and disposes of trash. Removes snow and ice from walkways, steps and roof using snow shovels. Spreads sand or chemicals on icy surfaces.
3. Keeps restrooms in clean and sanitary condition and replenishes necessary supplies. Keeps lunchroom in clean and orderly condition. Cleans and maintains appliances in sanitary condition. Washes windows inside and outside.
4. Makes minor repairs to buildings, such as changing light bulbs, ceiling tiles, and light grates.
5. Raises and lowers flag.
6. Moves office furniture and equipment as necessary.
7. Loads and unloads freight. Assists in deliveries (coffee, meals, water, and newspapers included).
8. Complies with established safety procedures.
9. Provides back-up as needed for Mailroom duties.
10. Accesses daily reporting using a computer.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:High school education or equivalent is preferred. At least six months experience cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, vacuuming floors, and using cleaning equipment in a business or commercial setting is required. A strong work ethic and a steady work history with experience working with minimal supervision.
Licensing/Certification:
Must have a valid driver's license (minimum Class F).
- Basic computer skills necessary for daily reporting and requisition of supplies.
- Working knowledge of power cleaning equipment and cleaning supplies.

o Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems. Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
Physical requirements include sitting, standing, grasping, bending, crouching, reaching, balancing, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing. Must be able to lift materials and supplies (in cumbersome shapes and sizes) up to 75 pounds. Requires a large amount of standing, walking, and working from a standing position. Must be physically able to perform some custodial duties at heights. Must be able to work within the rated capacity of the Utility’s aerial lifts, ladders, fall restraint devices, and/or other job-related equipment.
Working Conditions:
Primarily indoor environment; however, may be required to perform field duties outside in all weather conditions. May be exposed to high and low temperatures, air contaminants (e.g., dust, chemicals), dirty environment, awkward or confining spaces, and dangerous conditions (e.g., moving parts, electrical hazards).
Safety Sensitive Position:
A safety-sensitive position involves the performance of duties which may have a direct and immediate impact on the safety of the public and other public employees. This is a safety sensitive position.
- Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities, including flame retardant/arc rated clothing. Management retains the right to require replacement due to wear and/or staining.
- Shift work and/or overtime may be required.
- Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
- Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
