Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Comptroller to oversee the financial activities of a growing electrical transmission and distribution (T&D) construction and maintenance organization. This role ensures compliance with accounting standards, provides financial oversight of complex utility projects, and supports executive leadership with timely, accurate financial data. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in construction finance, job cost accounting, and multi-jurisdictional utility operations.
Duties
Financial Leadership:
•Manage and supervise all accounting operations including general ledger, job cost, AR/AP, payroll, and tax compliance.
•Lead month-end and year-end close processes and prepare accurate financial statements.
•Provide reporting on actual vs. budgeted performance, margin analysis, and KPIs for project and executive teams.
Project & Job Cost Accounting:
•Implement and maintain accurate job cost tracking by project, client, region, and contract type (unit-based, T&M, lump sum).
•Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and ensure timely revenue recognition in compliance with ASC 606.
•Collaborate with project managers and estimators to manage budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete models.
Utility-Specific Contract Management:
•Ensure proper accounting for Master Service Agreements (MSAs), emergency response work, and ongoing maintenance contracts.
•Oversee client billing processes, including labor/equipment/material breakdowns, prevailing wage compliance, and lien releases.
Compliance & Risk Oversight:
•Ensure financial compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (including DOT, FERC, and union rules, if applicable).
•Manage external audits, bonding requirements, and interface with sureties, insurance brokers, and tax consultants.
Cash Management & Strategic Planning:
•Monitor cash flow, working capital, and capital expenditure plans.
•Lead the annual budget process and support long-term financial planning in line with the company’s growth strategy.
ERP Systems & Process Improvement:
•Lead the accounting team in adopting and optimizing ERP and project management software (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, B2W, HCSS, or Sage 300 CRE).
•Identify and implement best practices to enhance internal controls, reporting accuracy, and process efficiency.
Team Leadership:
•Manage and mentor accounting staff across multiple divisions or business units.
•Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement in the finance team.
Qualifications
· Education & Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
•8–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with 5+ years in a senior role within construction or utility contracting.
•Strong understanding of job cost accounting, revenue recognition, and construction project accounting practices.
•Experience in electrical transmission and distribution construction or maintenance is highly preferred.
•Proficiency with construction ERP/accounting software and advanced Excel skills.
•Strong leadership, communication, and analytical capabilities.
· Preferred Experience
•Experience working with major utilities and investor-owned utility (IOU) clients.
•Knowledge of storm response billing and rapid project mobilization accounting.
•Familiarity with union labor tracking, certified payroll, and Davis-Bacon Act compliance.
•Multi-entity, multi-state operations and consolidation experience.
