About This Job

The Role

Keep the Water Flowing. Join the Front Lines.

At Rainbow Municipal Water District, we're all about providing clean, reliable drinking water and wastewater services to the vibrant communities of Rainbow, Bonsall, and parts of Vista, Oceanside, and Fallbrook. We take pride in making a difference—and as a Utility Worker in our Construction Department, you’ll get to make a difference too.

We’re looking for team players who are ready to roll up their sleeves and jump into action—especially when a water main breaks in the middle of the street or a hydrant gets taken out by a late-night fender bender. When stuff hits the fan, you’re the hero on the scene.

This isn’t just a job—it’s essential work that keeps our community running. You’ll be part of a skilled construction crew that installs, maintains, and repairs the backbone of our water system: mains, service lines, valves, pumps, motors, and hydrants. We’re hiring at multiple levels (Utility Worker I or II) based on your experience and certifications. Got Water Distribution certs, a Class A license, or AWS D1.1 welding cert? You may qualify for a higher level—and higher pay.

Utility Worker I- Pay range: $28.01-40.62/hour

Utility Worker II - Pay range: $32.21-46.69/hour

This is a boots-on-the-ground, make-a-difference kind of job. Spots will fill fast, so don’t wait—apply early! We may close this posting once we have enough qualified candidates.

Day to Day Life

What’s a Day on the Job Like? No two days are exactly the same, but one thing’s for sure—there's never a dull moment.

As part of our construction crew, you're one of the first responders when something goes sideways with the water system. Think burst pipes, busted hydrants, and surprise leaks—your team jumps in to keep water flowing to homes, businesses, and farms across our District.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll be doing:

Fixing What’s Broken

You’ll inspect, repair, and replace all kinds of water system parts—pipes, valves, hydrants, regulators, air vacs, pressure controls, and more. You’re the one making sure everything works the way it’s supposed to.

Operating the Big Stuff

From dump trucks and backhoes to trenchers, tampers, and jackhammers—you’ll get to handle all kinds of heavy equipment. If it digs, hauls, or lifts, chances are you’ll be using it at some point.

Getting Sites Ready (and Cleaned Up)

Before and after the work, you’ll prep job sites and clean them up—whether it's in the middle of a street or out in the field. You’ll also help keep the shop and tools in good shape.

Keeping Things Safe

You’ll help manage traffic around work zones, making sure everyone stays safe while the job gets done right.

Putting It All Back Together

Once the fix is in, you’ll backfill trenches, patch roads, and make asphalt and concrete repairs. You'll even estimate how much those repairs will cost.

Welding When It’s Needed

If you’ve got welding skills, you’ll use them to make pipeline repairs and keep equipment in top shape.

Hands-On, Team-Oriented, and Never Behind a Desk

This is real work, with real impact—and you’ll be doing it shoulder-to-shoulder with a crew that has your back.

The Ideal Candidate

Is This the Job for You? Let’s Find Out.

This could be your perfect fit if:

You’ve got skills and you're proud of it.

You’re in your element working with your hands, outdoors, and doing physical work that actually matters. Whether it’s fixing, building, or digging—you’re all in.

You’ve done the work and want something more.

Maybe you’ve worked in construction, roads, pipelines, or landscaping—and now you’re ready to step into a career with purpose, stability, and room to grow. Welcome to the water world.

You’re the go-to person when there’s a job to be done.

You’re not afraid of overtime, emergency call-outs, or holiday work. If a pipe breaks at 2AM, you're the one who shows up ready to roll.

What You’ll Need to Bring to the Table:

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Bonus points if you’ve taken classes toward an AA in Water Distribution or a related field.

Certs & Licenses:

A Water Distribution Operator D1 Certificate? Nice to have, will be required within 6 months.
A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake & tanker endorsements? Even better.
AWS D1.1 Welding Certificate? Another big plus.

(If you don’t have these yet, no worries—we’re still interested, especially if you're motivated to earn them.)

Experience:

1–2 years of construction work on roads, pipelines, or similar is required.
Landscaping experience? That's a plus.
Know your way around backhoes or excavators? Even better.
Got pipeline welding or GIS experience? Nice extras but not must-haves.
