Construction Officer/Inspector
Wage Range: As per collective agreement ($45.76 – $55.79) per hour depending on role and experience)
Location: Campbell River, BC
CHC is a wholly owned subsidiary of BC Hydro formed in 1962 that provides the qualified skilled trades workforce for generation facility projects in the Province of British Columbia named in a collective agreement between CHC and the Allied Hydro Council of British
Columbia. CHC provides the labour resources in accordance with the terms and conditions of the collective agreement and provides other human resources and labour relations functions.
Basic Purpose:
Acts as a construction site coordinator and inspector on civil, electrical, and mechanical projects associated with a variety of hydroelectric and power grid development projects.
Major Responsibilities and Duties (to fulfill major purpose):
•Inspects projects activities, administers contracts and maintains liaison with contractors/Construction Services to ensure that work, materials, progress, and costs meet BC Hydro expectations; resolves related problems and advises staff of major problems; authorizes payments and acceptable deviations from contract specifications
•Conducts, evaluates and directs on-site testing, surveying and estimating activities
•Provides input into project planning and the drafting of tender documents; participates in pre-job meetings
•Maintains liaison with project team members and local interest groups and related agencies; identifies construction, safety and environmental problems and recommends alternative strategies.
•May be required to act as official on-site BC Hydro representative with the associated authority to commit BC Hydro to project activities and resulting costs
•Prepares daily and weekly reports of project activities and arranges for required permits and clearances.
•Provides a high level of expertise in a technical specialty and/or provides a broad multi-disciplinary expertise
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
•Excellent working knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the construction substations, transmission lines and hydroelectric facilities
•Excellent working knowledge of inspection procedures and skills
•Excellent working knowledge of various methods of contract delivery system.
•Good working knowledge of survey procedures
•Good working knowledge of applicable testing requirements
•Good understanding of engineering drawings
•Good working knowledge of project planning.
•Ability to meet established construction schedule
•Knowledge of contract administration law
•Good working knowledge of project costing, estimating and payment procedures.
•Good team leadership skills.
•Working knowledge of related safety regulations.
•Ability to read and prepare technical reports
•Good verbal and written communication skills.
•Good interpersonal skills.
•Ability to work at heights and underground
•Ability to drive a motor vehicle.
Working Conditions:
Spends the majority of the day, over 70% of time, exposed to all weather conditions while performing job functions. Works at construction and office site. May be required to work underground, up on scaffolding or up towers. May spend the majority of the day on feet on rough terrain. May have to drive from site to site daily.
Experience, Training and Education (demonstrating requirements):
Completing of a National Diploma of Technology in either Civil & Structural or Electrical from an Institute of Technology or relevant trades apprenticeship course or four (4) years of related construction experience.
Must hold a valid class five (5) driver's license.

Night Shift may be required, Weekend work may be required. Shifts 5-2 or 14-7 may be required.
