Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Project Manager, Construction & Facility Assets, the Construction & Maintenance Assistant will be responsible for various construction and facility maintenance duties contributing to overall presentation and upkeep of Conservation Halton sites. In collaboration with other staff and departments, this role may contribute to experiences, programming, events, and recreational activities. This position would take a lead role in the construction/maintenance of assigned buildings, additions, renovations, and other structures assumed by Conservation Halton staff. The Construction & Maintenance Assistant will be expected to:

- Perform maintenance-related tasks and safety checks associated with Conservation Halton sites including but not limited to trails, area buildings, visitor facilities, Small Drinking water Systems, grounds, and signage.

- Provide a high level of assistance with the development and implementation of various facility-related improvement projects utilizing all related sub trades (Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Drywall, Painting, Ceramic tile, Roofing, Landscaping, Soil and erosion control, Heavy equipment operation, etc.), in development of buildings and other structures, including trails.

- Assist in the training, supervision, recruitment, and evaluation of seasonal, part-time, and volunteer staff.

- Work effectively with other divisions and external contacts when working on corporate maintenance needs and special projects.

- Enforce applicable area regulations.

- Perform duties and ensure that assigned employees and volunteers work in accordance with Conservation Halton’s Safety Policy and Procedures and in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.

- Operate snowplows and sanding equipment during the snow season, including occasional weekends as required.

- Assist with programming support/emergency repair in the various Conservation Areas weekdays and weekends as required.

- Act on behalf of the Project Manager during acting Project Managers absence.

- Perform custodial activities for assigned facilities and other related duties as directed.


Your Qualifications

- Experience in all or most of the following: Rough and Finish carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, minor electrical, painting, ceramic tile, roofing, landscaping, soil and erosion control, and small and/or heavy equipment operation would be highly desirable. A high level of carpentry skills is required.

- A license and/or a training certificate in a related trade(s) and 5 years’ experience pertaining to an infrastructure maintenance related profession.

- Working knowledge of related legislation and applicable regulations including but not limited to the Ontario Building code, AODA, WHMIS, Safe drinking water Act and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

- “Small Drinking Water System” Certified Operator is an asset.

- First Aid & CPR training is an asset.

- Valid Class G Driver’s license in good standing.

- Minimum secondary school education/diploma required.

- Excellent communication, organization, planning, time management, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork skills.

- Collaboration with other departments to complete organizational goals.

- Experience operating small and/or heavy equipment: tractors, plows and front-end loaders, aerial lifts, skid steer, backhoe.

- Ability to operate/interpret standard construction tools such as saws, table saws, mitre saws, planners, nail guns, level/laser measuring equipment, blueprints, etc.

- Ability to work in a variety of outdoor conditions and adapt to the daily challenges associated with day-to-day operations.

- Able to lift up to 60 pounds, stand, and walk for long periods of time.

- Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams).
