As a Communications Manager

Under the supervision of the Senior Communications Manager, you will support communications and brand strategies to effectively tell MCE’s story in a way that is accessible to diverse audiences. You are responsible for meeting agency communication goals through public relations efforts, content development, and strong relationships with media outlets. You will manage MCE’s communications strategy, including media relations, blogs, social media, awards, and sponsorships.

You will work closely with MCE staff, marketing and communication consultants, community partners, and third-party program vendors to implement effective communication strategies to amplify the agency’s story. This role is deeply collaborative, working across the Public Affairs department and MCE to accomplish goals and objectives, making you an integral part of our team.

Key Responsibilities: Communications Manager

Manage public relations efforts including developing press releases and media pitches, overseeing approvals and developing talking points to support public relations efforts.
Coordinate responses to media inquiries, collaborating with subject matter experts, department heads, and executives on timely and accurate responses.
Build and maintain relationships with local and state communications professionals, media partners, and communications teams from other community choice energy providers to enhance collaboration.
Develop and securely maintain digital media kits and related website content including MCE’s press page.
Identify opportunities and prepare content for award submissions to position MCE as an industry and community leader.
Coordinate internal communications, FAQs, talking points, and announcements and new initiatives including rate changes, energy programs that include solar, battery, electric vehicles, etc.
Provide messaging support for public information requests.
Manage and maintain talking points repository ensuring key agency messaging and content is well-organized and accessible for use by the Public Affairs Department and MCE.
Identify and coordinate industry sponsorships and executive speaking opportunities to promote MCE thought leadership at non-MCE events.
Provide support for MCE staff training around messaging and communications.
Coordinate with the marketing team to develop powerpoints, collateral, and ensure both team’s goals are reflected in each other’s work products.
Deliver presentations as needed and trains others on standard presentation materials.
Manage third party vendor support as needed. Primary point of contact for public relations vendors.
Lead special campaigns and other key projects as needed.
Develop blog posts and web content.


Qualifications Required Skills

Experience with developing high-quality writing, research, and communication work products
Project management.
Experience with managing relationships with media.
Experience with delivering clear oral and written communications.
Experience working with diverse communities and perspectives.
California residence is required with a strong preference for a candidate residing within commutable distance of MCE offices located in San Rafael, and Concord CA.


Experience & Education

Bachelor’s degree in business or communications or other applicable related fields -and-
Five (5) years of experience in public relations, business communications, writing, or other related fields.

+ Certifications or licenses in mentioned fields are preferred.


Knowledge of

Business and media communications best practices.
Project management best practices (developing and leading cross-functional teams, setting and preparing meeting agendas, assigning and tracking action items and basic process management tasks).
Social media content creation and management.


Ability to

Be thorough and detail-oriented.
Manage multiple priorities and quickly adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
Clearly communicate agency products, programs and services in both verbal and written form.
Help distill complex energy-related topics (Net Energy Metering, virtual power plants, etc) into easily understandable content.
Draft press release, FAQs, talking points and other agency communications.
Develop and sustain strong relationships with MCE media partners, external communications stakeholder, vendors, and MCE staff and Board of Directors.


Language And Reasoning Skills

Apply strong task prioritization, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Manage projects and time efficiently.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive compensation package offered, based on candidate experience along with generous benefits and perks, including fully paid premiums for health insurance, parental leave, dependent care subsidies, student loan repayment, and employee wellness program.

Starting Salary Range:

$128,258-$167,804
