Department Overview

Information Technology Title 300 General Construction maintains and operates PG&E's telecommunications, infrastructure, service centers and substation facilities. We are a unified organization comprised of various departments which collaborate effectively to deliver high quality technology solutions and support to our internal customers

Position Summary

This is an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.

Communications Technicians construct, enhance and maintain computer and telephone network systems by assembling parts and equipment and executing the job design package. Construct and maintain electric and gas monitoring and protection systems to ensure the safe delivery and transmission of gas and electricity.

The position is a General Construction position, and individuals must be able to travel and transfer to a new headquarters upon request at any time; throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $72.59 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

Job Responsibilities

Receives job specific instructions and orients to the Plans and Engineering notations. Reads and interprets plans, estimates, blueprints and sketches specific to the job assignment. Plans equipment, tools and supplies for each assignment.

Communicates verbally with crew members at start of shift to review daily work assignments, potential safety issues and changes in work. Communicates effectively with all co-workers and customers to ensure work processed efficiently. Communicates by phone and radio with Crew Lead/Supervisor/clerical staff regarding job and equipment needs. Uses e-mail to correspond with customers and co-workers.

Provides on the job training/orientation/demonstration and assistance to apprentices and other crew members. Attends and participates in various training classes and meetings.

Drives Company van and pickup to transport materials and equipment to job site, as assigned. Performs monthly vehicle inspections. Refuels vehicle and checks oil, as needed. Cleans windows and maintains interior housekeeping to ensure a safe and organized environment.

Installs/Maintains/Repairs various types of communication equipment and devices in a variety of locations, including on transmission towers. Adjusts and calibrates microwave systems. Construct and maintain electric and gas monitoring and protections systems. Provide emergency response to Fiber Optic Network.

Conducts visual and mechanical inspection of communications equipment. Performs tests and troubleshooting of multiplex, fiber optics, microwave, PBX and telephone equipment. Operates computerized testing equipment to test electronic and mechanical components.

Records changes to job prints/sketches. Prepares job logs, timecards, calibration records and reports.

Cleans and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment. Cares for test instruments and protective equipment.

Qualifications


Minimum:

Must possess an FCC (Federal Communications Commission) Certificate known as the GROL – General Radiotelephone Operators License . To obtain the GROL, you must pass elements one and three of the FCC’s written exam. Applicants who don’t possess a valid GROL will NOT be considered.

5 years of experience as a Telecommunications Technician

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience

Must possess a valid California Driver's License

Ability to work in all types of weather extremes

Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions

Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays

Must be able to lift 25 pounds a minimum of one time a day

Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Must be able to work in confined spaces

Must be able to work with and/or around helicopters

Must be able to climb towers and work at heights up to 300 feet


Desired:

Successful completion of telecommunications technician apprenticeship

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering

Associate degree or technical certification in IT, Computer Science or Electronics

Good verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of computer hardware and radios
