Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

The Senior Commissioning Field Engineer position is accountable for factory test and commissioning activities on Solar Mobile Turbomachinery (SMT) projects manufactured in a Solar-designated contract manufacturing facility. The majority of the responsibilities for this role will be conducted inside the Propell Manufacturing facility, Solar’s designated contract SMT manufacturer, located in Granbury, Texas. Further to the factory test and commissioning activities at Propell, the role would also consist of periodic field support of the SMT product during initial setup and startup or other district support needs for the product, on a global basis, as well as possible support in other designated SMT manufacturing centers should the need arise.

The Senior Commissioning Field Engineer will report to the Customer Services Regional Service Manager, but will work closely with key Propell Manufacturing staff, Solar’s SMT product ownership and support teams, such as SPE, Supply Chain, Project Management, Quality and District Services, as well as with Customers. The overall goal of this position is to ensure SMT products fully tested, commissioned, and free of quality defects prior to on-time shipment obligations from the manufacturing facility, ensuring a high degree of quality and customer satisfaction.

Domestic Relocation is available for this Role

Position Location: Granbury, Texas or Fort Worth, Texas

NATURE AND SCOPE

This position reports to the Regional Service Manager. The Senior Commissioning Field Engineer’s (CFE’s) main task is to develop and oversee the strategy for factory testing, commissioning, and final customer acceptance of assigned SMT packages. The CFE is the focal point for communications and solutions of engineering problems during the factory commissioning phase of a project. He/she must be self-initiated and capable of directing personnel and resources at the manufacturing facility during critical stages of the project and must be willing to travel for periods of time to both domestic and international locations to support local district teams with initial setup, startup, and knowledge transfer. The CFE brings continuity and project knowledge to the factory commissioning of a project by attending project status update meetings, pre-commissioning meetings, engineering design reviews, and other internal or external meetings as required. Close coordination and good communication with internal or external suppliers (Propell, Solar Supply Chain, Engineering, Project Management, Product Ownership, Districts, etc.), as well as customers and other Solar groups is required. This position is essential to ensure that Solar’s risk is managed on SMT projects, and issues during factory commissioning or field installations are resolved efficiently and that the project is successfully executed and handed over.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Prepare for and develop a thorough knowledge of each assigned SMT project by tracking it through factory testing, commissioning, and project execution.
Participate in status review, initial kick-off, design review and/or pre-commissioning meetings as required for assigned projects.
Identify and communicate potential project problems to Business Management, Program Management, Engineering, or the appropriate District as required.
Be an advocate for factory manufacturing, testing, and commissioning velocity improvements.
Communicate quality issues and actively participate in root cause investigation, resolution, and product improvement discussions.
Work with the Project Manager and the host District to develop the technical and logistical strategies for the initial field setup and startup of a project. Acts as a lead subject matter expert to assist field personnel on the solution of field problems related to the installation and startup of said projects.
Provides guidance to junior level CFE’s, engineers, FSR’s, or other personnel involved with the SMT program.
Document activities through comprehensive factory activity reports, test reports, and performance reports as required by the SMT program.
Ensure all contractual requirements are met on time and support various teams (Propell, Project Management, District) in transfer of ownership to the customer.
Assist engineering, commissioning, and field groups in establishing or enhancing procedures and processes related to testing, commissioning, setup, and startup of SMT equipment.

Position Qualifications

The position requires prior experience in turbomachinery operations, maintenance, and knowledge of the general principles related to gas turbines and their driven equipment.
Proficiency in the troubleshooting of turbomachinery and its related systems, specifically turbine and generator control systems, is required.
Excellent administrative and written/verbal communication skills are extremely important.
Good interpersonal and communications skills are required as the CFE often facilitates diplomacy between Solar, Propell, and the end-user.
Three to five years of previous field experience and/or experience as a level III or IV FSR is a strong desire, but other relevant experience would be considered.
A bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline, or the equivalent practical experience in a technical background, is required.
Must be available to travel (25% or less)
