COLLEGE STUDENT INTERNSHIP-ENGINEERING ASSISTANT
POSITION SUMMARY
•Internship positions are available during the summer between the spring and fall semesters; typically, mid-May to mid-August
•Ideally, a student in this position would start after their freshman year and work three (3) successive summer terms, subject to meeting position requirements and the Cooperative budget.
•The intent is for the student to work within various areas within the Engineering and Operations department for the purpose of becoming knowledgeable of engineering related functions within the Cooperative and to become productive in these areas as time in the position will allow; the following will be emphasized:
+ System Engineering - System planning, reliability studies, specifications, switching procedures, distribution inspections, etc. and the use of the automated mapping system and engineering software.
+ Distribution Design - Design of the electrical distribution system and the use of AutoCAD, the Cooperative distribution design software, surveying tools, field staking tools, GPS equipment and all other software, equipment and/or tools.
+ Substation Construction and Maintenance - Inspection, installation and maintenance of all electrical apparatus, cabling, conductors, fiber, and hardware within substations.
+ System Metering - Installation and testing of various electrical meters and instrument rated meter packages used by the Cooperative and inspections of distributed resources such as solar and battery storage facilities.
+ Relaying and Controls - Installation, programming and testing of relays and controls used within substations and on the distribution lines.
Provide efficient and effective support services to various departments within Berkeley Electric Cooperative's Engineering and Operations department.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
•Works closely with experienced Distribution Design personnel in the field staking of underground distribution layouts and overhead distribution lines.
•Assists in the installation, operation, programming, maintenance, testing, and/or repair of substation and electrical distribution special equipment as seen fit.
•Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair, and performs testing, of all types of meters and meter bases owned and operated by the Cooperative and completes the associated documentation and/or computer entry to record all work and/or results
•Assists the System Engineers at the Cooperative in the engineering and planning activities associated with the electrical distribution system
•All duties as assigned within the parameters of all applicable federal, state, and local labor and safety laws and/or regulations.
•All positions are required to participate in weekly group meetings with other interns. May involve special assignments and field trips.
EDUCATION
•Must be currently enrolled in college studying Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering; preference may be given to Electrical Engineering students.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Must have good general office and computer skills, be detail oriented, reliable, efficient, conscientious and able to work with minimal supervision. Must have organizational skills.
•Must have an effective working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams.
•Must have the ability to communicate effectively and in a friendly and personable manner with employees, members and the public.
•Must have solid mathematical and problem-solving abilities.
•Must possess a valid S. C. Driver's License
•Must develop a fundamental knowledge necessary to perform the design of the Cooperative's electrical distribution lines in accordance with Rural Utilities Service (RUS) specifications, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements and the Cooperative's specifications, policies and procedures.
•Promptness is extremely important. Must be a team player.
WORKING CONDITIONS
•Inside and outside work in varying weather conditions.
•Some overtime may be required.
Lifting of heavy objects weighing 100 lbs. or more may be required.
