Root 3 Power is looking for a qualified Associate Electrical Engineer to join our rapidly growing Houston, TX office. Must reside within a 50-mile radius of the work locations listed as no relocation is being offered for this position.

The Associate Electrical Engineer reports directly to, and works closely with, Root 3 Power’s Principal Engineers to performs a range of electrical engineering tasks pertaining to the evaluation, design, construction, control, operation, and maintenance of low and medium voltage electrical power systems.
- Assist in completing I&E construction packages including conduit & cable schedules, plan drawings, grounding systems, three-lines, one-lines, equipment elevations, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Assist in developing specification documents for major electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, variable speed drives, power conditioning equipment, and other related devices to the requirements of the specific engineering application.
- Review vendor equipment drawings and data.
- Participate in factory acceptance testing at equipment manufacturer facilities.
- Ensure electrical designs meet or exceed the requirements and recommendations provided in the NEC, NFPA, NESC, IEEE, and other industry-relevant standards.Use various software tools such as ETAP, SKM Power*Tools, and EasyPower to model commercial, industrial, and healthcare power systems and analyze for:
- Short-circuit capability
- Protective Device Coordination
- Arc-Flash Hazard
- Transient Motor Starting
- Harmonics
- Transient Stability
- Cable Ampacity (Neher-McGrath calculations)
Analyze transient oscillography and event records to determine the cause of electrical faults and disturbances on client-owned power distribution systems.
Document the findings and conclusions resulting from the execution of power systems studies and troubleshooting/root cause analysis for presentation to the client. Be able to articulate technical recommendations in a clear and concise manner.
Develop software settings and configure various programmable components used in power controls such as protective relays, reduced voltage soft starters, RTU’s, PLC’s, network switches, and SCADA systems.
Assist 3rd Party construction and testing groups and provide field engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup project phases.
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work directly with clients from proposal development through project execution.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience with AutoCAD drafting software.
- Ability to learn applicable codes and standards involving power system design/engineering such as NFPA, NESC, IEEE, etc.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of employment start date is preferred.
- Currently hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States. Root 3 Power does not provide immigration or work via sponsorship.
- Must be capable of standing, walking, climbing stairs, carrying tools/equipment up to 50 lbs., and wearing appropriate PPE for the work environment.
