Summary:
The Road Quality Control Technician is responsible for inspection and routine testing of hot mix asphalt and assists in adjusting plant settings to ensure compliance with specifications and for working with paving operations to establish plans, monitor for compliance, and correct as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Perform daily QC testing on hot mix asphalt as required; use accepted methods to inspect, sample and test aggregates, asphalt or other materials for the purpose of quality control.
•Help establish a rolling pattern, number of passes, and temperature of mat when each roller machine is to compact the asphalt mix and establish the amplitude and vibration of the vibratory rollers.
•Monitor and ensure that this rolling pattern is adhered to by observing and recording the number of passes each roller machine makes on the mat and ensuring that each roller machine compacts the asphalt mix within the temperature range that has been established for the mat.
•Walk beside the paving equipment, measure temperature and observe rolling patterns.
•After the asphalt is placed and compacted, use an electronic, non-nuclear, density gauge at frequent internals across the width of the mat to measure and record the density of the mat.
•Record readings and inform the paving crew of the results. Identify problems with paving operations. Discuss with paving crew any necessary adjustments to be made in the rolling pattern to enhance the density of the mat and ensure no substandard densities.
•Drill and cut 6” diameter core samples from the mat. Label each core and log the location. Deliver cores to the lab for measurement of the core densities. Use results to establish a correction factor between the electronic gauge and the actual density of the cores. Calibrate the electronic gauge as necessary.
•Assist in mix design development and changes in plant production.
•Perform stockpile analysis on incoming aggregates and RAP stockpiles as needed.
•Develop and maintain relationships with key customers, facility managers, DOT personnel, State, County and Municipal personnel, internal staff and suppliers.
