Overview
The PPL Quality Operations Specialist is responsible for assessing and maintaining welding procedures and ensuring the company is employing proper welding practices. This position is an individual contributor role requiring expert knowledge of the steel plate industry product lines, welding procedures and codes. The role directly reports to the Operations lead and routinely interacts with company weld technology and quality groups.
Responsibilities
- Regional SME in welding equipment, procedures and practices
- Travel to project sites required (Minimum once a month or as needed)
- Provide technical input for the application, design and modification of construction weld equipment
- Produce contract specific inspection and test plans
- Compile engineering deliverables into a Field Contract Instruction Handbook, which provides the instructions, procedures and documents used to perform and record welding, inspection and testing of products
- Provide project support to construction for welding, NDE, test planning and scheduling
- Provide support to field supervision for the proper application of welding, NDE and testing procedures
- Provides guidance to supervision on the collection and recording of field test results and records
- Perform site inspections to view and verify welding productivity and quality standards are being met
- Provides guidance to field crews in the application of welding and NDE testing procedures; assist in maintaining welder continuity records
- Can independently resolve NCRs
- Ability to subcontract NDE firms for project specific NDE contracts as necessary
- Capable of taking the lead in performing Pressure Testing of tanks and vessels
- Assists Safety Department when needed with special safety aspects of welding, burning, and testing.
- Review customer specifications provided with a Request for Quotation and provide to Estimating any items that will require additions
- Provides guidance to Welding, Quality and Erection Supervision to meet Code, Standard, CB&I and customer requirements maintaining minimum product quality levels
- Actively provides oversite for proper application of safety welding, NDE and quality standards during jobsite and fabrication shop inspections
- Proactively supports Project Management in efforts to improve established procedures, processes and standards resulting in increased cost savings and higher quality
- Assists Engineering, Sales and Estimating in interpreting client specifications and provide advice for what items to take exception to in order to reduce contract costs and items to add man-hours or cost to cover contract expense to meet the client demands
- Openly discuss with clients’ technical aspects of the work to address advantages and cost saving measures available to them on their project
- Monitor and ensure compliance with internal quality standards
- Conduct audits and inspections of operational processes and documentation
- Identify inefficiencies and recommend corrective or preventive actions
- Support continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma)
- Analyze quality performance data and generate reports
- Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Maintain accurate records of quality procedures, audits, and corrective actions
- Assist in training staff on quality standards and best practices
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, safety, and compliance teams
- Participate in root cause analysis and implement preventive measures- 10+ years of relevant experience, 5+ years in a Weld Engineering role preferred
- Extensive knowledge of AWWA, API, ASME, AWS and related plate industry codes
- ASME welder qualification in relevant processes and procedures
- Knowledge of CB&I Storage Engineering, Fabrication, and Construction methods
- Recognized as an industry technical expert in welding procedures and practices
- Familiarity with steel plate industry preferred
- ASNT NDE Level II weld inspector preferred or prior SNT-TC-1A employer certifications
- Business presence and polish

USD $106,000 - $130,000 Annually
