About This Job

Summary

Reporting to the Mine Supervisor, the primary role of the Underground Miner is to support safe and productive mining operations within an underground environment. Positions range from operating jumbo drills, bolters, scoop trams, and haul trucks (Miner 1-5). All miners are expected to assist with all aspects of the mining cycle including mucking, trucking, drilling, loading, installation of services, and other general duties as required.

About Us

The Keno Hill mine, located within the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Keno Hill, is one of the highest-grade silver districts in the world, is situated 350 kilometres north of Whitehorse, and lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. It comprises 242 square kilometres (km2) with numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past-producing mine sites. Keno Hill is expected to produce 2.7-3.1 million ounces of silver in 2025 as the mine ramps up production.

The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here’s What You Can Expect In This Role

Operate underground equipment (jumbo, bolter, scoop, haul truck, etc.) to safely and efficiently meet daily production and development targets.
Perform drilling, loading, priming, and blasting activities according to engineered designs and company standards.
Conduct pre-operational checks and basic maintenance on equipment, reporting any defects or issues to supervision.
Visually inspect, scale, wash down, and paint the face; identify and address hazards such as bootlegs, miss holes, flags, and lifters.
Assess ground conditions and install ground support as per the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
Prepare and advance development headings, including mucking, trucking, bolting, drilling, loading, and servicing.
Place and remove blast guards and ensure compliance with all blasting procedures.
Complete daily workplace inspections, equipment logs, and safety reports; communicate findings verbally and in writing.
Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment at all times.
Support inventory control and assist with transporting supplies underground as needed.
Lead by example in promoting a safe, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
Mentor and support other team members to foster continuous improvement and development.
Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications (All Levels)

Previous underground mining experience is strongly preferred; specific equipment experience (jumbo, bolter, scoop, haul truck) will be considered an asset.
Minimum 3 years’ experience operating underground equipment for advanced roles (e.g. Jumbo Operator).
Valid class 5 driver’s license is required.
Must hold valid Yukon blasting certification or be willing to write.
Strong safety mindset.
Mine Rescue Certification and Underground Blasting Certificate would be highly regarded.
Demonstrated ability to read mine plans and specifications for underground mining.
Ability to undertake drilling and blasting activities in a safe and efficient manner.
Proficient in multiple functional areas typically associated with underground mining.
Qualified to operate various pieces of underground equipment safely and productively.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.

Safety, Health, Environmental Responsibilities And Accountabilities

Maintaining good housekeeping standards

Work Environment

Employees will be regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including snow and ice, as well as extreme temperatures ranging from cold to heat. The work environment may involve contact with potentially hazardous wildlife, moving mechanical parts, elevated work areas, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the use of explosives. There is also a risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration. Noise levels can occasionally be loud, depending on the task or location on site.

Work Location & Schedule

This is a fly-in fly-out position based at a remote mining camp, operating on a rotational schedule of 14 days on and 14 days off. Camp accommodations and meals are provided while on site. All travel to and from the mine site is arranged through a designated travel agency and coordinated from approved flight hubs.
