About This Job

AI AutoCAD Engineer

Working with our business partners to create, improve and sustain industry and infrastructure. Orbital Engineering has been driven by this core purpose for more than 50 years - energizing Orbital team members and helping our clients solve challenging and complex problems with innovative engineering, inspection, and construction solutions. Orbital team members are guided by the fundamental beliefs of building trusted relationships, personal accountability, innovation, and excellence in everything we do. Orbital is looking for others to join our team to continue activating our purpose and embrace our values.

Orbital Engineering is seeking a skilled and innovative AI AutoCAD Engineer with strong expertise in AutoCAD and the Autodesk software suite to join our forward-thinking team. In this role, you will bridge the gap between advanced AI technologies and CAD-based engineering workflows, developing intelligent tools and automation solutions that enhance design, drafting, and modeling efficiency. This is a fully REMOTE position within the United States.

You will be responsible for creating and implementing AI-driven applications that integrate with AutoCAD and Plant 3D, with a focus on automating repetitive tasks, improving visual recognition of technical drawings, and enhancing object detection within engineering models. Your work will directly contribute to modernizing engineering processes through the targeted use of machine learning, NLP, and computer vision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Position duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Algorithm Development: Design, develop, and implement AI algorithms, including computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), large language models (LLMs), and traditional methods such as dimensionality reduction, anomaly detection, time-series forecasting, optimization algorithms, and graph algorithms.

2. Autodesk Task Automation: Lead the development of automated workflows within Autodesk software (e.g., AutoCAD, Plant 3D) using both deterministic programming techniques and AI-driven solutions.

3. Object Detection and Recognition: Lead efforts in object detection, recognition, and tracking, utilizing state-of-the-art techniques to achieve superior performance.

4. Image Processing: Develop and optimize image processing pipelines for tasks such as image enhancement, segmentation, and feature extraction.

5. Deep Learning for Design Automation: Apply deep learning techniques to enhance and automate CAD-related tasks—such as drawing recognition, layout prediction, and intelligent model generation—using frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch within Autodesk environments.

6. Model Training and Optimization: Train, fine-tune, and optimize AI models for accuracy, performance, and adaptability across different CAD and image-based datasets.

7. Collaboration: Collaborate closely with software engineers, data scientists, and product managers to integrate computer vision solutions into products and applications.

8. Testing and Evaluation: Develop and implement testing protocols to evaluate the performance, robustness, and reliability of computer vision models in diverse environments.

9. Documentation: Maintain thorough documentation of all models, algorithms, and implementations for knowledge transfer and future development.

Requirements:

1. Education: Bachelor's/Master's/Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Vision, or a related field.

2. Experience: Minimum of three years of proven experience in developing and implementing computer vision algorithms, with a strong portfolio of successful projects. Extensive, proven experience building automations in Autodesk.

3. Programming Skills: Proficient in programming languages such as Python, C#, and SQL, with experience using relevant libraries and frameworks (e.g., OpenCV, pandas, scikit-learn), as well as Autodesk APIs and scripting tools (e.g., AutoLISP, .NET API, Dynamo) for automation and integration within CAD environments.

4. Data Science: Strong understanding and practical experience in taking AI automation from ideation to implementation in AutoCAD.

5. Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze complex automation and AI challenges and deliver innovative solutions.

6. Team Player: Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

7. Adaptability: Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and contribute to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

8. Communication: Candidate must be fluent in the English language and able to communicate complex concepts with business leaders
