Job Description: Heavy Equipment Operator / CDL Driver (Oil & Gas Industry)
The Heavy Equipment Operator / CDL Driver is responsible for safely operating heavy machinery and commercial vehicles to support oilfield construction, drilling, production, and maintenance activities. This dual-role position involves equipment operation, hauling materials, and assisting field crews to ensure efficient and compliant operations across oil and gas sites.
- Operate heavy machinery such as dozers, excavators, backhoes, graders, track hoes, loaders, skid steers, and forklifts.
- Perform site preparation, trenching, excavation, grading, backfilling, and right-of-way (ROW) work.
- Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies in support of drilling, pipeline, and facility construction operations.
- Conduct daily inspections and basic maintenance (greasing, fluid checks, minor adjustments) on all assigned equipment.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely, efficiently, and within manufacturer and company guidelines.
- Drive commercial vehicles (Class A or B) such as water trucks, vacuum trucks, winch trucks, haul trucks, or flatbeds.
- Transport equipment, materials, and supplies to and from well sites, laydown yards, and operational facilities.
- Safely secure loads and comply with DOT regulations, weight limits, and transport procedures.
- Maintain accurate logs, delivery records, and inspection reports.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, DOT regulations, environmental guidelines, and oilfield safety standards.
- Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
- Report unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment issues immediately.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and compliance with site-specific protocols (H2S, confined space, etc.).
- Assist field crews with material handling, site cleanup, and other tasks as needed.
- Coordinate with supervisors and dispatchers for scheduling and job requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area and vehicle.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- 2–5+ years of heavy equipment operation and/or CDL driving experience; oilfield experience strongly preferred.- Valid CDL Class A or B with clean driving record.
- Experience with pipeline, facility construction, or oilfield hauling is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment operation, safe driving practices, and oilfield procedures.
- Ability to read grade stakes, site plans, and operator manuals.
- Good communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Field-based work in active oilfield areas, including drilling sites, production facilities, pipeline ROWs, and construction zones.
- Exposure to extreme weather, noise, dust, uneven terrain, and physically demanding conditions.
- May require long hours, overtime, rotational schedules, and travel to remote job sites.
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs as needed.
- Ability to climb on/off equipment, stand or sit for long periods, and operate machinery for extended durations.
- Ability to work outdoors in harsh or variable weather conditions.
