We are seeking a highly experienced Transmission Planning Consultant to lead technical studies and provide strategic insights into the evolving power grid landscape. This role involves conducting advanced transmission system analyses, collaborating with utility clients, and guiding project execution from concept to delivery. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in power system modeling, regulatory compliance, and project leadership.
Senior Advisors are responsible for leading a team of advisors or senior advisors and providing tactical advice to clients at the department, director, or manager level. These individuals must be able to understand complex industry and technical challenges and develop and lead solutions from different disciplines at the tactical level. A typical scope of work for this position includes developing solutions to complex problems that involve technical and economic perspectives.
- Perform technical computer power flow simulation analysis to forecast future system conditions.
- Conduct comprehensive transmission system studies including load flow, stability, short-circuit, and voltage analysis using industry-standard tools.
- Evaluate grid performance and recommend solutions to support renewable integration and system reliability.
- Interpret and apply regulatory standards (NERC, FERC, regional entities) to ensure compliance and assess operational risks.
- Lead technical execution of planning projects and mentor junior engineers and analysts.
- Develop and present technical reports, financial models, and strategic recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
- Support business development efforts including proposal writing and client engagement.
- Collaborate across teams to deliver high-quality consulting services tailored to client needs.
- Mentor Associate and Entry level planning engineers
Business Development responsibilities include identifying and helping to develop strategic revenue-generating relationships with existing or potential customers. After an initial adjustment period, Senior Advisors typically will perform Business Development activities assisting others in this area. Achievement of Business Development activities which result in being able to support one’s self in billable work. The ability to support additional staff in billable work will improve one’s assent within this position’s pay range. However, Senior Advisors with strong technical skills who do not perform any level of Business Development activity may only ascend to the mid-level of this position’s pay range.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in transmission planning, utility operations, or power systems consulting.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant technical field
- Strong understanding of transmission system planning methodologies and regulatory frameworks.
- Recognized as a top industry expert in at least one area of the utility industry as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, leadership in technical societies, industry awards, and/or patents
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive space
- Ability to work in a team dynamic
- Proficiency in software tools such as PSS®E, PSLF, PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
- Professional Engineer (PE)
- PhD in Electrical Engineering or a relevant technical field
- Familiarity with regional transmission organizations (e.g., PJM, CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, SPP).
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Experience with financial modeling and lifecycle cost analysis.
