The Geoscientist role at AEC is ideal for professionals who thrive in highly collaborative environments where end-to-end ownership is valued. This position spans technical interpretation, operational input, and development planning—providing exposure to the full lifecycle of subsurface development. Candidates must be comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment, where workload prioritization is critical, and every team member contributes meaningfully to the broader company objectives.
Role
- The Geoscientist holds responsibilities for subsurface interpretation, input to development and appraisal planning, and assisting with geologic operations. This role will work closely with geology, petrophysics, geophysics, reservoir engineering, operations, regulatory, and land counterparts.
Reports To
– Manager, Geology PRB (1 position) and Manger, Subsurface UCO/New Ventures (1 Position)
- Perform regional and local geologic characterization and mapping of formations.
- Conduct geologic evaluations using core, well logs, seismic, and other subsurface data.
- Integrate offset drilling and production data into subsurface assessments.
- Gather and incorporate new data to refine field models and recommend further data acquisition.
- Maintain development inventory layers and tie production results to targeting windows.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (Drilling, Completions, Production, Land, Regulatory) to assess pad locations, drilling plans, and completions for Subsurface Appraisal Plans (SAPs) and Field Development Plans (FDPs), while leading the assessment, definition, and communication of Success, Ambiguity, and Failure (SAF) criteria across exploration, appraisal, and development programs.
- Contribute to scoping and advancement of early appraisal to Late Development projects.
- Generate BHLs, maps, and slides for operations and permitting.
- Ensure BHLs comply with legal spacing and subsurface planning guidelines.
- Plan and support pilot hole and lateral logging/coring operations, including advanced sample collection (Geochem/Revochem).
- Provide post-TD learnings from drilling metrics, geosteering, mudlogs, and ensure data integrity in company systems.
- Collaborate with drilling teams on casing point designs and multi-play planning.
- Support water source and disposal well planning.
- Assess and categorize inventory in alignment with calibrated technical fairways and type curve areas (TCAs).
- Evaluate geologic risks and uncertainties of target formations.
- Provide geologic input for competitor intelligence and lease sale documentation.
- Support land and production teams with unitization, flaring exemptions, and regulatory exhibits/testimony.
- Work with technical analysts and technology teams to ensure geoscience software is accurately populated and maintained.
- MS in Geology/Geophysics Preferred/ BS required
- 15 plus years plus experience in subsurface technical analysis supporting exploration, development & production success.
- Experience in the Rockies and/or multi-basin environments is a plus.
- Full asset lifecycle subsurface development experience.
- Strong business acumen with ability to align subsurface work with broader business objectives and operational priorities.
- Proven ability to operate effectively in smaller organizations or entrepreneurial teams, where multitasking, cross-functional collaboration, and adaptability are essential
- Proficiency in Geographix, Starsteer, and Spotfire preferred
- In-depth knowledge of O&G subsurface analyses, operations, conventional, unconventional development/appraisal (unconventional in recent history).
- Demonstrated experience/proficiency in any or all the following is highly preferred: a) Play-concept development, b) Sequences stratigraphy, c) Subsurface risk & uncertainty analysis
- Ability to work independently with limited structure and bring forward proactive solutions
- Demonstrated ownership mentality and willingness to step outside traditional role boundaries when needed
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and influencing skills
- Effective communicator across all levels of organizations internal and external
- Curious and motivated self-starter, taking proactive role in projects and recommendations.
- Predominantly office-based with occasional travel to drill sites, field, and regulatory hearings
- Availability during non-business hours as needed

The starting rate for this position is expected to be between $210,000 - $235,000, based on experience, qualifications, and internal pay alignment. Final compensation may vary from this range depending on a variety of factors, including a candidate’s education, skills, prior experience, and evolving market conditions. This range represents Anschutz Exploration's good-faith estimate of the pay for this role at the time of posting.
