Job Summary
Staff Accountant - International will manage accounting functions for Murphy Oil’s exploration and development operations outside the US/Canada. The ideal candidate will possess strong SAP proficiency and experience navigating Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) and Joint Operating Agreements (JOA), serving as a key liaison for partner audits and cross-functional collaboration to drive process efficiency and financial accuracy in a global setting. This position will report to the Senior Manager, Operations Accounting International, within Murphy’s Operations Accounting Organization.
This role will be in our Houston Corporate office. We work two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.
Responsibilities Operational & Technical Accounting
- Lead, establish, and refine accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls to support international upstream operations
- Know and execute full well life cycle accounting from Exploration and Appraisal through Development, Production, and Asset Retirement
- Prepare and review corporate accounting entries, including accruals, allocations, FX translation, intercompany transactions, and consolidation support
- Perform multi-currency bank reconciliations and related journal entries
- Support and prepare documentation for internal and external finance audits, including providing audit evidence, responding to audit inquiries, and ensuring adherence to SOX and internal controls
- Manage interactions with partners, vendors, and local accounting providers
- Support partner audits, government cost audits, and finance audit activities related to JV operations and PSC environments
- Provide accurate financial support to multicultural asset teams, including assets governed by Production Sharing Contracts (PSC) and Work Program and Budgets (WB&P)
- Work closely with operations, finance, commercial, tax, legal, and international asset teams to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting
- Identify and implement improvements in accounting workflows, reporting efficiency, and internal controls
- Steward financial reporting and provide variance analysis vs internal budgets and forecast
- Apply strong analytical and decision-making skills to navigate ambiguity, shifting priorities, and evolving project requirements
- Special projects as assigned by Manager
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Analytics, or other relevant discipline
- Minimum of 15 years’ experience, preferably in E&P Oil and Gas Production with exposure to financial technology transformation projects
- Highly self-sufficient with the ability to take initiative and operate independently
- Strong decision-making ability in fast paced or unclear environments
- Excellent communication, relationship building, and problem-solving skills
- Strong foundation in GAAP, IFRS, and cash basis accounting, including multi-currency bank reconciliation best practices
- Ability to travel internationally when needed
The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- International upstream oil & gas experience, especially in Africa and South America
- Strong working knowledge of Production Sharing Contracts (PSC), cost recovery frameworks, and Joint Operating Agreements (JOA)
- Proficiency in SAP (required); Hyperion, Power BI, or Spotfire experience is a plus
- Multilingual abilities preferred not required: French, Spanish, or Portuguese
