POSITION SUMMARY:
The Shop Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety policies and procedures that ensure compliance with OSHA 1910 standards and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role focuses on fostering a proactive safety culture within a large structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication shop. The Shop Safety Manager oversees all shop safety operations, conducts hazard assessments, manages training programs, and ensures a safe work environment for all employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies, procedures, and programs aligned with company objectives and regulatory requirements (OSHA, state, and local).
•Conduct regular shop inspections, hazard assessments, and job safety analyses (JSAs) to identify and mitigate risks.
•Lead incident investigations, including root cause analysis, CauseMap, corrective actions, and reporting.
•Oversee safety training programs for all shop personnel, including new hire orientation, equipment-specific training, and annual refresher courses.
•Maintain accurate records of safety activities such as inspections, incidents, training, and regulatory reporting.
•Collaborate with production managers and supervisors to integrate safety into daily operations and production planning.
•Monitor and enforce compliance with PPE requirements, lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, machine guarding, and other shop safety policies and procedures.
•Act as the primary liaison for OSHA, DEQ, and DAQ inspections and local regulatory safety audits, ensuring readiness and compliance.
•Manage safety coordinators or other personnel within the shop safety team.
•Analyze safety data and metrics to identify trends and recommend continuous improvement initiatives.
•Develop and lead emergency response drills, including fire, spill, and medical emergencies.
•Coordinate with environmental and health teams to address air quality, noise levels, and hazardous material handling within the shop.
•Participate in safety committee meetings and drive engagement in the company’s safety culture initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to perform each essential duty daily.
Education and Experience:
•Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related field (preferred).
•Minimum of 5 years of safety management experience in general industry, preferred in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment. (Preferred experience in a steel fabrication facility).
•Professional certifications such as STS, OHST, CHST, CSP, or CSMP highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Strong knowledge of OSHA 1910 standards and other applicable safety regulations.
•Experience implementing and managing safety programs in a fabrication or manufacturing setting.
•Ability to lead and motivate employees to follow safety policies and procedures.
•Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
•Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software (ProCore).
•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for incident investigations, injury management, and hazard assessments.

•Must be able to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl throughout the shop and fabrication areas for extended periods.

•Regularly required to use hands and arms for handling materials and operating safety equipment.
•Must be able to wear required PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and respiratory protection as needed.
•Ability to respond quickly to emergencies in noisy and physically demanding environments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
•Primarily based in a large structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication shop environment.
•Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, overhead cranes, welding operations, cutting equipment, and heavy materials.
•May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and loud noise levels requiring hearing protection.
•Frequent exposure to hot or cold conditions depending on seasonal temperatures within the shop.
•Occasionally required to work outside standard business hours in response to incidents or emergencies.
