GMC Underground is a leading underground utility contractor specializing in natural gas distribution, directional drilling, and the installation of other critical utilities across Alabama. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Safety Manager / Quality Control Manager to oversee and uphold our safety and quality standards across all projects statewide.

Position Summary:

The Safety Manager / QC Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all safety and quality control procedures for natural gas distribution and utility installation projects. This individual must be highly knowledgeable in OSHA regulations, DOT guidelines, and natural gas distribution standards. The ideal candidate is passionate about workplace safety and quality assurance, is comfortable with both field and office environments, and can effectively utilize technology to drive compliance, reporting, and process improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety Management:

- Develop, implement, and manage company safety policies and procedures in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and local regulations

- Conduct site inspections and audits to identify and mitigate safety risks

- Lead accident investigations, root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions

- Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS), incident logs, and safety training records

- Provide hands-on safety training to field personnel including tailgate meetings and onboarding

- Promote a safety-first culture across all job sites and teams

Quality Control:

- Oversee quality control procedures for installation of gas distribution lines, directional drilling, and utility projects

- Ensure adherence to project specifications, industry standards, and customer requirements

- Conduct inspections and testing on completed work to verify conformance

- Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and crews to resolve QC issues

- Maintain accurate documentation, including daily reports, photo logs, testing data, and punch lists

- Participate in pre-job planning and post-job review processes to support continuous improvement

Administrative & Technology Use:

- Utilize project management and safety software platforms for documentation, scheduling, and reporting

- Prepare and distribute regular safety and quality performance reports

- Maintain compliance with recordkeeping and regulatory reporting requirements

- Stay current with advancements in safety and quality technologies and methodologies

Qualifications:

- Minimum 5 years of experience in safety and/or quality control in utility construction (natural gas preferred)

- In-depth knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and industry-specific safety regulations and QC procedures

- Experience in natural gas distribution installation and horizontal directional drilling preferred

- Strong computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, cloud-based inspection/reporting tools, etc.)

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and travel regularly to job sites across Alabama

- Relevant certifications such as OSHA 30, PEC, Energy WorldNet (EWN), or similar are a strong plus

Work Environment & Travel:

- Approximately 50% travel throughout Alabama to inspect projects and lead onsite safety/QC efforts

- Combination of remote work and office-based responsibilities

- Must be flexible and responsive to operational needs

Pay: $50,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
