SGC Surveying is currently seeking a SUE Crew Chief! The SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Crew Chief is responsible for leading the safe, accurate, and efficient execution of Level A and Level B SUE field operations. This position works in close collaboration with the SUE Project Manager, SUE Manager, and other designated personnel to ensure successful project delivery within scope, schedule, and budget.
Compensation is based on experience. This role will require travel on a consistent basis.
Duties and Responsibilities of the SUE Crew Chief:
•Adhere to and ensure compliance with all SGC Safety protocols during SUE project field operations.
•Demonstrate personal leadership and model servant leadership for project team members. Exemplify a proactive, Total Ownership philosophy.
•Responsible for the safe, thorough, and accurate production of SUE projects to which they are assigned.
•Collaborate with the SUE PM and SUE Manager to allocate SUE Technicians for project roles that meet the scope, schedule, and budget requirements of the project.
•Work collaboratively with project team members to accomplish project goals.
+ Ensure that safety is the top priority of all field operations including, but not limited to, loading and unloading equipment, mobilization to and from project sites, and conducting the various tasks involved with Level A and Level B SUE field production.
+ Conduct a safety briefing documented by a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) report upon arrival at each job site or at any time site conditions or tasks change.
+ Motivate the involvement of SUE Technicians in SGC safety protocol by ensuring all crew members understand and feel free to exercise their “Stop Work Authority”.
+ Scope Management – Participate in a scope briefing with the SUE PM or SUE Manager prior to mobilizing to project sites. The SUE Crew Chief should understand the overarching goal of the project, the project scope limits and be equipped with all pertinent documentation to conduct the field work safely, efficiently, and accurately.
•Responsible for ensuring that the scope limits and tasks for each project to which the SUE Crew Chief is assigned are completed thoroughly and accurately.
•The SUE Crew Chief is responsible for ensuring that all the ground indicators of subsurface utilities within the project scope area are investigated and the associated subsurface utilities are located accurately with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Utility Locators (EM Locator). This will often require investigating above ground indicators of subsurface utilities that are outside of the scope limits of a particular project.
•Ensure that all subsurface utilities that are present on any document provided are accounted for.
•The SUE Crew Chief should, at a minimum, have daily contact with the SUE PM or SUE Manager while in the field conducting SUE operations.
+ Cost Management – The SUE Crew Chief should understand the budget of projects to which they are assigned and drive efficiency by directing the activities of the SUE Technicians with whom they are teamed.
+ Schedule Management – The SUE Crew Chief is responsible for completing their assigned task within or under the time allotted in the budget.
+ Reporting – The SUE Crew Chief is responsible for the thorough, accurate, and professional documentation of SUE Level A and Level B field activities including photo documentation, sketching of found utilities, Level A
•Test Hole Data Reports, and notes detailing any pertinent information about any subsurface utility detected or above ground subsurface utility indictor observed.
•Change Management – The SUE Crew Chief should immediately contact the SUE PM or SUE Manager if conditions in the field are observed that will likely or possibly lead to field efforts exceeding the allotted time in the project budget.
•Relationship Management – The SUE Crew Chief is the face of the SGC SUE Division field operations and should conduct themselves in a courteous and professional manner when communicating with SGC client field personnel, other contractors on job sites, and the public at large.
+ The SUE Crew Chief is accountable for all team members assigned to their project also conducting themselves in a courteous and professional manner.
+ Closeout – Prior to leaving and project site, the SUE Crew Chief should have a debriefing meeting with the SUE PM or SUE Manager to ensure that there will be no need for return trips.
•Develop and maintain a professional rapport with client, project team members, and internal/external stakeholders.
•Demonstrate leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skills.
•Maintain target billable goals and participate in process improvement team efforts to achieve divisional/company objectives.
•Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
•SUE Technician Skill Development – The SUE Crew Chief shall build the skillset of the SUE Technician with whom they are paired through constant training for and feedback of all SUE Level A and B field activities.
+ The SUE Crew Chief will supervise and conduct quality checks on all SUE tasks completed by a SUE Technician.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities of the SUE Crew Chief:
•Expert Level understanding and ability to utilize GPR and EM Locators to account for all subsurface utilities within a particular project scope that are detectable.
•Expert level knowledge of all Level A SUE excavation equipment and procedures.
•Knowledge of computer applications and functions including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and project management software (Microsoft Project, Project Insight, etc.).
•Ability to prepare and/or maintain project plans, reports, documents, and procedures to address specific project needs.
•Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally with project team, management, staff, and clients/stakeholders.
•Ability to work in a team environment and efficiently direct the duties of others.
•Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
•Ability to travel and work extended hours for project assignments and meetings.
Education and Experience:
•Minimum of 2 years of experience with Level B SUE Utility Designation equipment and procedures.
•Minimum of 2 years of experience with Level A SUE Utility Verification equipment and procedures.
•Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral mediums all pertinent data and information about projects to which they are assigned.
•Natural survey or utility experience is preferred.
Physical Demands: Duties are performed in a field environment.
•Must be able to safely walk, bend, crouch, as well as other physical activities necessary to the thorough capture of SUE data.
•Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances.
•Must be able to withstand working in harsh weather conditions (hot or cold).
•Must be able to remain standing, walking, digging, as well as other strenuous activities for many hours on end.
•Safely operate and maintain SUE equipment including, but not limited to, their assigned truck, GPR, EM Locator, and Level A SUE Excavation equipment.
