JOB TITLE: Repair Welder
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
As a Repair Welder, you will make repairs to long-seam and girth-seam welds primarily utilizing SMAW processes. You will use equipment and tools such as grinders, arc gougers, air chisels, and SMAW welding rods. You must have extreme attention to detail, as the work is often delicate, and the welding tools used are dangerously hot. You must strictly follow safety precautions. Repair welding requires that you follow exact weld procedures and processes.
REQUIRED DUTIES:
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to repair long-seam and girth-seam welds, using processes such as SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
- Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
- Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g., gouge/grind defects, verify temperature, verify consumables and parameters)
- Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead)
- Repair structural pipe and pressure vessel welds and other products by gouging out defects and replacing it with sound weld materials
- Must be able to repair the defects on long-seam and girth-seam welds, found by quality control or NDE (X-ray/UT)
- Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety
- Review and interpret x-ray film, remove the affected area of the weld by utilizing arc-gouging or grinding and prepare the proper equipment for welding.
- Maintain work area and keep equipment clean and orderly
- Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (welding hood, face-shield, gloves, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned
- Proven experience as a welder in industry.
- Experience using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW welding equipment and procedures.
- Prior experience in repair welding (preferably AWS structural pipe or ASME pressure vessel welding).
- Current knowledge of the AWS AND ASME standards.
- Ability to read and interpret x-ray film.
- Ability to read and follow weld procedures.
- Ability to perform arc-gouging to successfully remove defects.
- Ability to perform welding using SMAW process in 1G, 2G, and 3G positions.
- Ability to verify and use appropriate consumables.
- Ability to conduct visual inspection of welds.
- Awareness and experience in all welding gear.
- Able to stand or crouch for long periods of time.
- Able to operate welding equipment at elevated heights.
- Able to lift up-to 50 pounds.
- Able to work in outdoor climates.
