We are hiring a dynamic and experienced legal professional to join our team as Principal Counsel, Labour & Employment Law. Based in Toronto, reporting directly to the Chief Legal and Strategy Officer. This role is instrumental in shaping and advancing our employment and privacy framework across global operations.
As Principal Counsel, you will provide strategic legal guidance on a wide range of employment and labour matters, including anti-harassment, leave rights, performance management, disciplinary issues, workplace investigations, and organized labour. You will draft and negotiate employment, settlement, and termination agreements, support HR in collective bargaining, and represent the company in mediations and before government agencies. You will also manage employment-related litigation and arbitration, working closely with external counsel to resolve disputes effectively.
In addition to employment law, you will lead the development and delivery of training programs and policy reviews, ensuring our people policies remain current and compliant with evolving legal standards. You will stay informed on legal trends and regulatory changes across jurisdictions and provide practical, business-minded advice to internal stakeholders.
A key part of this role also involves serving as our Chief Privacy Officer. You will design and implement a Privacy & Data Protection Program tailored to our operations, provide legal counsel on privacy matters, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. You will manage privacy incidents, conduct internal audits, and interact with data protection authorities as needed. You will also support procurement teams in negotiating privacy-related contractual agreements and lead training initiatives to build internal awareness and capability.
To succeed in this role, you must hold an LL.B or J.D. and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. You bring at least eight years of experience advising on employment issues, ideally with a mix of in-house and law firm experience. Experience in unionized environments and privacy law is a strong asset. You possess high emotional intelligence, exceptional communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. Fluency in both English and French, as well as a degree in Civil Law or membership in the Barreau du Quebec, would be considered assets.
We understand no candidate meets every qualification listed. If your experience differs but you believe you can add value to the role, we want to hear from you! We are committed to inclusivity and welcome applications from individuals of all abilities. If you need accommodation during the application process, please contact us, and we'll provide the necessary support.
