The Meter Reader is responsible for reading residential, commercial, and multi-dial water meters records meter readings, and reporting problems as required.
- Walks 6 to 10 miles per day
- Lifts heavy objects, up to 90 pounds, on a frequent basis
- Reads commercial maps to identify locations of businesses and residences
- Completes quarterly residential and commercial, rural, and difficult meter reading routes and records meter readings maintaining a high degree of accuracy and daily route completion
- Checks to see that meters are functioning properly and reports broken glass, lids, and other defects by use of a published two-digit code
- Reports leaks and malfunctions in connection with the meter
- Locates and reads covered or submerged meters
- Uses small equipment such as hand-held computer, hand-powered bilge pumps, gas powered pumps and blowers, and gas analyzers as necessary
- Hears and reports complaints of customers and refers difficult complaints to immediate supervisor
- Drives car, truck, or van, with responsibility for ensuring that it is in good condition and adequately equipped
- Utilizes simple electronic microprocessor for recording meter readings
- Ensures that microprocessor, small tools and safety equipment on vehicle are accounted for and in safe operating condition
- Responsible for the security and maintenance of the microprocessor while in the field
- Ensures compliance with all OSHA, MOSHA and WSSC safety procedures and documentation
- Must be capable of lifting heavy objects (up to 90 pounds) on a frequent basis, climb into vaults and read meters in confined spaces
- Work in an environment where there are routine risks of exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution
- Must be capable of walking six to ten miles per day under all weather conditions; possess high degree of accuracy; and good customer relations skills
- Employees are required to work in inclement weather

- Some knowledge of the geography and street locations of Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties
- Ability to write legibly and to accurately transfer meter reading numbers
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions or directions
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public
- Ability to perform meter reading duties under adverse traffic and weather conditions
- Ability to overcome physical obstacles preventing access to the meters
