About the Role:
U.S. Pipe and Foundry is seeking talent to join our Engineering Team as a Metallurgist. This position provides technical guidance to Operations in the areas of melting, casting and heat treatment for the production and processing of ductile iron pipe.
Specific Responsibilities:
•Involved in all phases of the iron melting, processing, holding and casting operations.
•Providing input on Alloy selection, raw material inspection, storage and usage, Refractory selection, application and use.
•Delivering iron having close temperature and chemical composition tolerances done at or below budgeted cost.
•Chemical analyses techniques and determining the proper metallic mix for melting and proper alloy additions.
•On all phases of the casting process including mold condition, machine condition, machine set-up, alloy additions and pipe handling.
•On all phases of the annealing process including temperature control, oven variables, and oven condition.
•Reviewing operating reports, evaluating cost data, the type and quantity of pipe produced, defectives, etc., to determine corrective actions needed.
•Works closely with Operations personnel to discuss problems and recommends solutions.
•Take corrective actions as required.
•Evaluates new alloys and materials; develops new processes and procedures as well as training on their use.
•Recommends and explains benefits of new technology to plant management for evaluation.
•Assists in Training on the Technical aspects of the processes in use.
•Performs other related duties as required.
Skills and Qualifications:
•College graduate with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science or five to seven years’ experience in the application of this knowledge to activities, such as supervision, safety, technical know-how and labor relations.
•Familiarity with coreless and channel electric melting processes.
•Experience in interpreting the metallography of the iron to determine compliance to process parameters and changes required, assess the quality of welds, and other issues that may arise.
•Possesses the ability to train the metallurgical aspects of the operations.
•The equivalent knowledge and training in order to provide a working knowledge of the regulations, practices, specifications and procedures concerned with the operations of the Company.
•Must have the ability to communicate with others in this technology.
•Must understand cost data, specifically related to the melting operation and in general to the plants as a whole.
Scope Data/Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
•The employee will be working in an office environment but will be walking through the plant on a regular basis exposing the employee to foundry operations.
•The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, oils, and atmospheric conditions such as dust, fumes, and metallic particles.
•The employee will be required to perform the following actions regularly: standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting. The majority of the actions will be standing and walking.
