The Lead Heavy Machinery / Diesel Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the inspection, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment and over-the-road (OTR) trucking fleets. This position provides hands-on technical expertise while leading maintenance personnel to ensure equipment reliability, safety compliance, and minimal operational downtime in demanding mining and hauling environments.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, powertrains, braking systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and emissions systems
- Service mining equipment including haul trucks, loaders, excavators, and support equipment
- Maintain OTR trucks, trailers, and fleet vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections to maximize equipment availability and lifespan
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electronic issues using diagnostic software and service manuals
- Lead, supervise, and mentor assistant mechanic
- Assign daily work orders and prioritize repairs based on production needs
- Inspect completed repairs for quality, safety, and regulatory compliance
- Provide technical guidance on complex or critical equipment failures
- Support training initiatives and skill development within the maintenance team
- Ensure compliance with MSHA, DOT, OSHA, and environmental regulations
- Enforce lockout/tagout, confined space, and safe work practices
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and regulatory documentation
- Coordinate with mine operations, dispatch, and fleet management to reduce downtime
- Assist with audits, inspections, and safety meetings
- Manage parts usage, tools, and shop equipment
- Coordinate ordering of parts and materials to support fleet uptime
- Recommend equipment rebuilds, replacements, or upgrades
- Assist in developing maintenance schedules and long-term asset plans
- High school diploma or GED (technical or trade school preferred)
- 5–10+ years of experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic- Strong working knowledge of heavy haul trucks, diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and air brake systems
- Proven leadership or lead mechanic experience
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data
- Valid driver’s license
- CDL (Class A or B)
- ASE certifications (T-Series preferred)
- MSHA Part 46 or Part 48 training
- OEM certifications
- Experience with fleet maintenance software and electronic diagnostic tools
- Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting ability
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills
- High level of safety awareness and regulatory knowledge
- Effective communication with operations and management
- Ability to work under pressure in production-critical environments
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Combination of shop, mine site, and field service work
- Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and extreme weather conditions
- May require extended hours or on-call availability
