Job Description
Hexium is seeking an experienced laser / optical engineer to develop optical systems for a device that integrates high-power lasers with metal vapor deposition in high vacuum. In this role you will work in a dynamic R&D environment, collaborate with our scientific team to define optical system requirements, and lead their design and procurement. Your work will focus on optics for conditioning, routing, and measuring light produced by high average power and high peak power nanosecond-pulsed, narrow-bandwidth lasers.
Company
Hexium is an early-stage company building hardware at the cutting edge of laser science, plasma physics and atomic physics. Join our team to help build transformational technology for supplying isotopes to the clean energy industry. We are based in the vibrant city of Austin, TX and offer a competitive compensation package that includes medical and dental benefits, 401(k) matching, employee stock options, performance bonuses, and paid time off.
Responsibilities
•Design optical systems for high average power, nanosecond pulsed lasers.
•Work with a team of physicists and engineers to specify optical system requirements.
•Design laser beamlines and diagnostics including tolerancing, component specifications, and alignment procedures.
•Design systems for active beam tracking and control.
•Support hands-on integration, alignment, and testing of laser-optical systems
Required Qualifications
•BS or Masters degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
•Experience designing optical systems for lasers.
•Experience using optical design software like Zemax, CodeV, ASLD, fiberdesk or Miró.
•Experience with optical design best practices / optimization using imaging-based and beam quality metrics.
•Experience with optical system tolerancing based on fabrication limits
•Hands-on experience with optical system integration and precision alignment techniques
•Experience with optical drawings and specifications
•Experience sourcing commercial and custom optics
Preferred Qualifications
•Experience with pulsed, high-power, and high-energy laser systems.
•Demonstrated expertise in the integration of optics into complex, multidisciplinary systems.
•Experience with high fidelity physical wave optics propagation in the near and far fields
•Experience with comprehensive end-to-end optical system modeling and characterization
•Proficiency in CAD software, such as Creo or NX CAD, for optical component design and integration.
